Kebaowek First Nation business based in Tyendinaga, Ontario wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 11th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify and Mastercard Canada, announced Shyra Barberstock, the Kebaowek First Nation Co-Founder of Kebaonish Inc., a business based in Tyendinaga, Ontario as the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Food & Drink Semi-Final Winner. Shyra has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow her business.

More than 300 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. From the 300 applicants, 100 were selected as Semi-Finalists and provided with training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges.

Last night, eight Food & Drink Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and advance as a finalist.

Judges included Philippe Forest, Vice-President, Indigenous Markets at RBC; Crystal Hunt, Senior Manager at Shopify; Natalia Karpova, Associate Managing Consultant at Mastercard Canada; and Tara Saunders, Director of Business Development at Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada;

The key lesson I’ve learned is the immense value of teamwork. I don’t need to have all the answers; instead, I can leverage my strengths and rely on my co-founders to bring their expertise to the table. While working solo can yield a good business, collaborating with a strong team creates an exceptional one.”

Kebaonish Inc. is an Indigenous and woman-led coffee and tea company that highlights the spirit of sharing in Indigenous cultures and communities worldwide. Co-founded by Dr. Shyra Barberstock and Dr. Rye Barberstock, Kebaonish is blending together concepts from Anishinaabe and Kanienkehaka teachings to promote leading with a good mind and good heart into every day, and it all starts with a cup of coffee or tea. Kebaonish also collaborates with Indigenous artists and creatives to wrap their product in culturally rich and colourful designs, a thoughtful initiative to strive for economic reconciliation and opportunity for Indigenous artists.

Shyra pitched to win funds to invest in Kebaonish’s packaging and marketing materials to be in competition with other brands in the market. Shyra has a goal to be one of the main leaders in the coffee and tea industry, expanding their reach with Indigenous art at each step of the way.

I also want to thank our families, friends, and colleagues for their unwavering support and encouragement. Your belief in us means the world!”

Pow Wow Pitch and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) are thrilled to announce their strengthened partnership for the year 2024, aimed at empowering Indigenous entrepreneurs within the tourism industry.

Indigenous tourism stands as a cornerstone for cultural preservation, economic sustainability, and community impact across Canada. Through this partnership, ITAC and Pow Wow Pitch reaffirm their commitment to nurturing Indigenous entrepreneurship, thereby safeguarding traditions, driving economic prosperity, and fostering community development.

This year, ITAC takes centre stage as the lead presenter of the Pow Wow Pitch Tourism Pitch, lending their expertise virtually as judges for the online Pitch Competition and in-person at live Pow Wow Pitch events. Furthermore, ITAC proudly sponsors the Tourism Award for the 2024 Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards, an accolade that recognizes excellence and innovation in Indigenous tourism endeavours.

In a commitment to hands-on support, ITAC will engage its employees as mentors, advisors, and judges, fostering growth and development for Indigenous entrepreneurs in both virtual and real-world settings.

Keith Henry, President and CEO of ITAC, emphasized the pivotal role of this partnership: “Our continued partnership with Pow Wow Pitch exemplifies our commitment to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurship and fostering growth within the tourism sector. Together, we are not only investing in businesses; we are investing in the future prosperity of Indigenous communities. ITAC’s vision for 2030 is for the Indigenous tourism industry to contribute $6 billion annually to Canada’s gross domestic product — making Canada the world leader in Indigenous tourism. To make that vision a reality, the Indigenous tourism industry needs to grow substantially in both the number of businesses and the number of industry employees.”

“The tourism sector is not only a vital economic engine; it’s also a means of cultural preservation and community empowerment. By supporting early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs, we are not just creating businesses; we are revitalizing traditions, empowering individuals, and shaping a more inclusive economy,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Our strong partnership with ITAC signifies our shared dedication to fostering innovation and opportunity for Indigenous tourism entrepreneurs across Canada. Together, we demonstrate the power of collaboration in advancing Indigenous economic sovereignty.”

As both organizations align their efforts, they pave the way for meaningful progress in amplifying Indigenous-led businesses and promoting economic sustainability within Indigenous communities.

In 2022, Pow Wow Pitch and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) launched the Creative Pitch Mini-Projects grant program to create a video series showcasing nine emerging Indigenous creative entrepreneurs, each of whom received $2,500 mini-grants to support Indigenous tourism businesses.

In addition to the mini-grants, there was an opportunity to be awarded a $15,000 grant commission to undertake a large-scale project. The creative entrepreneur Eva Nicholas, Founder of Wabanaki Creations and Art, was the successful recipient and had the opportunity to learn and work alongside an Indigenous tourism business of her choosing.

Over the past year, Eva has embarked on her large-scale project in collaboration with the Skye River Trail, which embodies the spirit of collaboration, cultural preservation, and entrepreneurial empowerment. With the grant, she was able to build a longhouse to preserve and revitalize a tradition that had been lost for over a century in her community. She also hosted a symposium uniting Indigenous artists from across Atlantic Canada to support them in building their businesses and thrive with their art.

The Longhouse Project

Eva collaborated with Skye River Trail in We’koqma’q First Nation, Nova Scotia, on the longhouse project – a symbol of Indigenous heritage, resilience, ceremony, and community.

This is one of the first longhouses in years to be built in the We’koqma’q community, this project highlights the importance of being able to gather in traditional spaces and the impact it has on community healing.

Eva shared experiences from her journey, highlighting the guidance she received from the longhouse community in Fredericton, whose teachings and insights have been instrumental in navigating the challenges faced during the longhouse project, such as sourcing materials for construction, overcoming harsh weather and two hurricanes.

“Everything is a teaching,” said Eva, “Each step along the way with our longhouse has been a lesson, and each time we rebuild, the longhouse becomes stronger, and so does the community building it. It has been healing.”

The longhouse project has also brought new opportunities to Skye River Trail, with other Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and communities coming to gather in the space for ceremony, knowledge sharing, and teaching circles. More importantly, it is a place for youth to learn their culture, traditions, and practices.

The Symposium Project

In addition to the longhouse, in February 2023 at Sky River Trail, Eva used the ITAC Creative Pitch grant to launch a Symposium to unite 40 Indigenous artists from across Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia to learn about how to take their art and build thriving businesses.

Eva worked closely with partners at Craft Nova Scotia and Mawi’Art to create a 100% Indigenous-led program that included training, knowledge sharing, and a focus on appropriate pricing and ways to access funding.

“It was so successful that it is bringing new funders to support these artists,” said Eva, smiling about a new partnership with the Canada Council for the Arts. “These organizations have so far been unsuccessful in getting Indigenous artists to apply for their programs, and so when they saw how successful this was, they now want to get involved.”

When asked about her motivation to create and bring the Symposium to Skye River Trail, Eva shared that it was born from her own experience.

“The saying about a starving artist is true,” said Eva. “Artists hustle and struggle. I wanted to let them know that ‘what you do is worth it, it is important, you are preserving your culture, and it is so meaningful’. I want other artists to know that what they are doing is worth more than what they are selling it for.”

Eva’s journey is a testament to the impact of the creative sector on tourism, bringing new opportunities not only to Skye River Trail and her community but also across Atlantic Canada. As she continues to grow this new sector of creativity and tourism, she invites others to explore and support these experiences, contributing to the enrichment, preservation, and prosperity of Indigenous communities.

Eva reflects on the success of her projects and shares that, “The opportunities that came out of this grant and building this longhouse were the seed for something that is hopefully going to be around for generations and generations.”

Through initiatives like the Creative Pitch Mini-Projects, ITAC and Pow Wow Pitch are fostering a spirit of collaboration, ensuring that Indigenous entrepreneurs like Eva have the resources and opportunities to shape a brighter future for their communities.

ITAC set to be the lead-presenter of the Tourism Industry Pitch

May 15, 2023 | Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition and non-profit organization supporting emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced a new partnership with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) as a Silver Partner for its 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Program.

Set to support more than 2,500 Indigenous entrepreneurs in 2023 with mentorship, funding, training, marketing and a safe and trusted community of support, ITAC’s investment is helping Pow Wow Pitch to scale its virtual programs for creative and tourism entrepreneurs, re-enter communities with on-the-ground support across Canada.

Last year, ITAC supported a Virtual Creative Pitch, providing $2,500 grants, mentorship and training to nine creative Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Canada to commission mini-projects showcasing Indigenous-owned tourism businesses. The nine creative entrepreneurs moved on to pitch to win the Creative Prize Finals, a $15,000 grant for a larger commissioned Tourism project with ITAC. Mini-project recipient, Votan Henriquez, Founder of NSRGNTS placed 3rd in the Pow Wow Pitch Semi-Finals in the Creative category.

“We need more Indigenous businesses in tourism, especially on reservations, to help tribes create their own tourism industry,” said Votan on his work with Thrive Tours in the mini-projects.

In addition, ITAC presented the Creative Award at the Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards to Dan General, Founder & CEO of DJ Shub Inc. of Fort Erie, ON, providing the winner with a $10,000 Prize.

This year, ITAC will be the lead-presenter of the Tourism Industry Pitch again and will also be contributing both virtual judges towards the virtual Pitch Competition and in-person judges attending live Pow Wow Pitch Competitions.

“We are thrilled to welcome back ITAC into the Pow Wow Pitch family and to continue to help shine the spotlight and provide innovative support to Indigenous creative and tourism entrepreneurs and businesses across Canada,” said Sunshine Tenasco, the Founder of Pow Wow Pitch. “The partnership is an example of what can happen when Indigenous-led organizations collaborate, co-create and build capacity in the Indigenous-led economy in our own way.”

“We are delighted to return as a Silver Partner for Pow Wow Pitch and to help uplift creative and tourism entrepreneurs and work with a grassroots community,” said Keith Henry, President and CEO of ITAC. “As we continue to work toward recovery for the Indigenous tourism industry, it is vital we celebrate and support Indigenous creators who make stories and businesses happen from coast to coast to coast.”

Pow Wow Pitch and Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada Release Nine-Part Video Series Highlighting Creativity and Collaboration

Pow Wow Pitch and the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) are excited to announce the release of a new video series showcasing nine emerging Indigenous creative entrepreneurs who received $2,500 mini-grants to support Indigenous tourism businesses. This partnership between ITAC and Pow Wow Pitch is the first of its kind, highlighting the importance of Indigenous creativity in the growing tourism sector.

THE JOURNEY

In July 2022, nine creative entrepreneurs were selected from the semi-finalists of the 2022 Pow Wow Pitch competition and paired with nine Pow Wow Pitch tourism semi-finalists. From July to October 2022, the entrepreneurs supported the tourism businesses with various projects, including photography, logo design, promotional videos, animated ads, digital assets, and artistic creations connected to the land.

On November 3rd, ITAC awarded a $15,000 grant commission to the creative entrepreneur who impressed them the most with their mini-project. The winner was Eva Nicholas, Founder of Wabanaki Creations and Art, for her project entitled Oonamaki Roots in partnership with Under the Stump in Newfoundland & Labrador.

“I draw my inspiration from my love for my culture and my passion for sharing what is sacred,” said Eva Nicholas, 2022 Creative Pitch Winner, from We’koqmaq First Nation, Cape Bretton, Nova Scotia. “Creative professionals, artists and knowledge keepers are so important to the Indigenous tourism sector. Thank you for this opportunity for my business and to collaborate with another Indigenous entrepreneur to share my knowledge of the land and art.”

THE VIDEO SERIES

As the summation of the pilot initiative, the launch of this 9-part video series is a celebration of the hard work and talent and an inspiring look at the potential of Indigenous tourism.

“We are proud to release this video series showcasing the hard work and creativity of these nine Indigenous creative entrepreneurs,” said Keith Henry, President and CEO of ITAC. “Their contributions have been invaluable in growing the Indigenous tourism sector, and we look forward to their continued impact. Thank you for your dedication and impact on the tourism businesses you supported.”

“Indigenous creative entrepreneurs have the power to transform industries, and this pilot program was a testament to the potential for collaboration and cooperation between Indigenous entrepreneurs,” said Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch. “We are grateful to ITAC for trusting us with this important initiative, and we congratulate all of the creative and tourism entrepreneurs who participated with enthusiasm. You are each paving the way for others to follow.”

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition for emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify, Meta and Mastercard, announced the opening of its eighth annual Pow Wow Pitch competition to Inuit, Métis and First Nations entrepreneurs across Turtle Island.

Through Pow Wow Pitch, Indigenous vendors, artists and entrepreneurs from Canada and the United States can pitch their businesses and business ideas virtually and live at pow wows and Indigenous festivals for their chance to join the Pow Wow Pitch Accelerator program and win more than $200,000 in cash prizes.

“Pow Wow is a place to meet, dance, sing, honour our culture and trade,” said Pow Wow Pitch Founder, Sunshine Tenasco. “Indigenous people have the ideas to make a difference in their communities, and Pow Wow Pitch is our platform to support one another as a community.”

How it works

Virtual: Between April 6th and June 21st, Indigenous entrepreneurs can submit a 1-minute video business pitch at www.powwowpitch.org/pitch as their entry into the Pow Wow Pitch Competition, or they can sign up and pitch live on Instagram through InstaPitch. Pow Wow Pitch will shortlist the top 80 Indigenous entrepreneurs as semi-finalists to receive mentorship, pitch training and compete in the virtual semi-final broadcasts for their chance to win $60,000 cash prizes and advance to the Grand Finale in October.

In-Person: Pow Wow Pitch will also be on-site for Indigenous entrepreneurs to pitch live at the Manito Ahbee Festival in Winnipeg on May 21st, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival in Ottawa on June 25th, and other major Indigenous powwows and festivals across Canada and the United States. Entrepreneurs can pitch their business or idea for one minute to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale.

The Finals: On October 19th, the top entrepreneurs from the virtual and live semi-finals will pitch to a panel of judges at the Grand Finale for the chance to win the top prizes: Alumni Prize ($5,000), People’s Choice Prize ($5,000), 3rd Prize ($5,000), 2nd Prize ($10,000), and 1st Prize ($25,000).

All entrepreneurs who enter the pitch competition will join the Pow Wow Pitch community, get access to a free Indigenous Startup Program, access more than $1,000 worth of free technology, tools and support, and have the chance to have their products and services featured in the Pow Wow Pitch annual Mailer Box to 2,500 customers and on the Pow Wow Pitch Marketplace launching later this year for socially-conscious customers looking to ‘Buy Indigenous.’

Last year’s Winner, Smudge the Blades, used the competition to grow awareness and forge new collaborations.

“Winning Pow Wow Pitch helped me get traction with major sports stores and distribution partners across Canada, gain coverage in news articles and Sportsnet, led to awesome collaborations with NHL Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, with new plans to work with the Shopify Build Native Team to revamp our website,” said Harlan Kingfisher, Founder of Smudge the Blades. “Through Pow Wow Pitch, I found friends and feel famous-even. People are recognizing the brand and me, which is helping us grow! It was an incredible experience and an amazing community.”

Powered by Partnerships

To scale the Indigenous-led pitch competition across Turtle Island, Pow Wow Pitch is working with industry leaders who believe in the power of Indigenous entrepreneurship. RBC, Shopify, Meta and Mastercard have signed on with significant multi-year support as Co-Presenting Sponsors of the initiative to allow Pow Wow Pitch to rise to its ambition to support every Indigenous entrepreneur.

“Shopify aims to bring more voices to entrepreneurship, and Pow Wow Pitch allows Indigenous entrepreneurs from all stages and intersections to share their dreams, beliefs, culture, and expressions of economic self-determination,” says Kyle St-Amour-Brennan, Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program Manager at Shopify. “Pow Wow Pitch has built one of the greatest Indigenous entrepreneurial showcases anywhere, and we’re privileged and excited to continue our ongoing partnership and shared mission to empower more Native entrepreneurs from communities everywhere.”

“Indigenous entrepreneurs drive innovation and change in their communities and across Canada,” said Garrick Tiplady, VP and Country Director at Meta in Canada, “We are proud to continue supporting Pow Wow Pitch and their incredible community of entrepreneurs through educational resources and funding.”

“At Mastercard, we are committed to fostering an inclusive economy that benefits everyone, including the Indigenous community,” said Sasha Krstic, president of Mastercard in Canada. “We recognize that Indigenous entrepreneurs face disproportionate barriers and, in partnership with Pow Wow Pitch, we are proud to address some of their unique barriers and challenges to help amplify the success of Indigenous entrepreneurs across the country.”
