Blood Tribe Kainaiwa business based in Lethbridge, Alberta wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 13th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify and Mastercard Canada, announced Kariza Manychief, the Blood Tribe Kainaiwa Owner of Night Owl Games, a business based in Lethbridge, Alberta as the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Innovation Semi-Final Winner. Kariza has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow her business.

More than 300 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. From the 300 applicants, 100 were selected as Semi-Finalists and provided with training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges.

Last Friday, eleven Startup Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and advance as a finalist.

Judges included Chad Garlow, Senior Manager of Indigenous Peoples Development Program at RBC; Johannes Valdes, Senior Social Impact Manager at Shopify; Imtiaz Qureshi, Manager Deal Management at Mastercard Canada; Sara Aghvami, Director of Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Belonging at Best Buy Canada; and Pamela Devonshire, Business Development Manager of ecommerce and Parcels at Canada Post.

“I’m hoping to bring a fun way of learning about Blackfoot culture that helps more people,” shared Kariza Manychief, Owner of Night Owl Games. “I’m excited to showcase my business and advance to the Grand Finale. I wouldn’t have made it without the help of my mentor, Josh Leith, and sister, Carlita Manychief.”

Night Owl Games is a language revitalization initiative to help make learning the Blackfoot language interactive, engaging, and fun. Kariza began developing her own board games when her mother asked her to design a game for her to use in the classroom. Night Owl Games hopes to make learning about the Blackfoot language and culture more accessible to not just children, but all ages. Kariza hopes to eventually be able to replicate her game designs with content from other Indigenous cultures to promote language revitalization across Turtle Island.

Kariza pitched to win funds to begin manufacturing her game design and to collaborate with Indigenous artists on the box design. She also would like to run community game nights to help gain feedback on her game.

“I’ve learned that it’s important to understand your strengths and weaknesses and to know where you need support,” shared Kariza. “Knowing that has helped me to build an amazing community that supports me. My advice is to keep trying, even when things aren’t working, take a breath, regroup, and try again. Don’t underestimate what you bring to the table, our ideas and perspectives as Indigenous entrepreneurs are important.”

The judges congratulate Kariza for her unique idea and innovative approach to language revitalization. The judges also applaud Kariza’s value proposition and clear outline of her community impact and presentation.

“Congratulations Kariza on your Semi-Final win and for advancing to the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Kariza’s dedication to revitalizing the Blackfoot language through interactive games makes learning fun. The preservation of Indigenous languages is crucial because our languages are the foundation to our identity, carrying the knowledge, traditions, culture, and values that define our peoples and communities. We look forward to spotlighting Kariza and sharing more about Night Owl Games with the Pow Wow Pitch community and growing our impact together.”

Last Friday, four Youth Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and advance as a finalist.

Judges included Chad Garlow, Senior Manager of Indigenous Peoples Development Program at RBC; Johannes Valdes, Senior Social Impact Manager at Shopify; Imtiaz Qureshi, Manager Deal Management at Mastercard Canada; Sara Aghvami, Director of Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Belonging at Best Buy Canada; and Pamela Devonshire, Business Development Manager of ecommerce and Parcels at Canada Post.

“I’m hoping to build and market my business, help communities form a deeper connection to nature, and revive ideas of sustainability and care for our aina (land) all across our country.,” shared Isabelle Dabbs, Founder of Witch’s Brew Nutrients. “There’s a lot that goes into starting a business. You’re able to learn things about yourself and grow as an individual, and that’s what makes starting and running a business so special. All I can say to other Indigenous entrepreneurs is to remember that no idea is too big or too small, and so long as you stay determined anything is possible.”

Witch’s Brew Nutrients is a new, eco-friendly approach to the average plant fertilizer that uses all natural ingredients and traditional knowledge to help plants flourish. Isabelle and her father came up with the idea to find an all natural solution to regular fertilizer that normally contains chemicals and additives that degrades soil quality. Isabelle’s mission is to provide a sustainable alternative to farmers, gardeners, and those looking to lead a more sustainable life through horticulture.

Isabelle pitched to win funds to expand her small production into a larger scale to provide products across the island of Oahu and eventually into the mainland of the US to help more communities. Isabelle hopes to achieve this goal by purchasing the necessary machinery, bottles, and packaging to scale up production of her liquid fertilizer. She hopes to inspire other young Indigenous entrepreneurs to take on challenges and try something new.

“I’d like to thank my 8th grade Agriculture teacher, for always supporting me and getting me into this business in the first place, thank you Ms.Espie!” expressed Isabelle. “It was such a surreal and emotional moment when I found out I was moving forward, but I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me so far and gave me the opportunity to be able to do this.”

The judges congratulate Isabelle for a job well done in her pitch and for clearly communicating how her passion for nature can promote ecological balance and inspire Indigenous youth.

“First I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of the youth who pitched their businesses, you all demonstrated courage and make me feel so proud to see such amazing emerging entrepreneurs,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “And way to go Isabelle on your Semi-Final win and for advancing to the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. Isabelle’s eco-friendly venture is a shining example of how Indigenous entrepreneurs are harnessing traditional knowledge to create sustainable solutions that support the protection and care of our lands. We look forward to spotlighting Isabelle and sharing more about Witch’s Brew Nutrients with the Pow Wow Pitch community and growing our impact together.”

Alongside selecting a winner, the judges also acknowledge the Runner Up for the Youth industry category. Simon Monteith, Founder of Simon the Scientist, was recognized for his engaging presentation and passion for inclusive science education for fellow Indigenous youth.

“Pow Wow Pitch is an incredible showcase of Indigenous trailblazers who are making a transformative impact on our communities with their resilience, ingenuity and unwavering commitment to success.” said Tracy Antoine, Senior Director of Indigenous Programs and Policies at RBC. “We’re so proud of all our participants and semi-finalists – their courage to participate leads to life achievements and their shared stories are truly inspirational.
Virtual: Between April 6th and June 21st, Indigenous entrepreneurs can submit a 1-minute video business pitch at www.powwowpitch.org/pitch as their entry into the Pow Wow Pitch Competition, or they can sign up and pitch live on Instagram through InstaPitch. Pow Wow Pitch will shortlist the top 80 Indigenous entrepreneurs as semi-finalists to receive mentorship, pitch training and compete in the virtual semi-final broadcasts for their chance to win $60,000 cash prizes and advance to the Grand Finale in October.

In-Person: Pow Wow Pitch will also be on-site for Indigenous entrepreneurs to pitch live at the Manito Ahbee Festival in Winnipeg on May 21st, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival in Ottawa on June 25th, and other major Indigenous powwows and festivals across Canada and the United States. Entrepreneurs can pitch their business or idea for one minute to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale.

The Finals: On October 19th, the top entrepreneurs from the virtual and live semi-finals will pitch to a panel of judges at the Grand Finale for the chance to win the top prizes: Alumni Prize ($5,000), People’s Choice Prize ($5,000), 3rd Prize ($5,000), 2nd Prize ($10,000), and 1st Prize ($25,000).

All entrepreneurs who enter the pitch competition will join the Pow Wow Pitch community, get access to a free Indigenous Startup Program, access more than $1,000 worth of free technology, tools and support, and have the chance to have their products and services featured in the Pow Wow Pitch annual Mailer Box to 2,500 customers and on the Pow Wow Pitch Marketplace launching later this year for socially-conscious customers looking to ‘Buy Indigenous.’

Last year’s Winner, Smudge the Blades, used the competition to grow awareness and forge new collaborations.

“Winning Pow Wow Pitch helped me get traction with major sports stores and distribution partners across Canada, gain coverage in news articles and Sportsnet, led to awesome collaborations with NHL Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, with new plans to work with the Shopify Build Native Team to revamp our website,” said Harlan Kingfisher, Founder of Smudge the Blades. “Through Pow Wow Pitch, I found friends and feel famous-even. People are recognizing the brand and me, which is helping us grow! It was an incredible experience and an amazing community.”

Canada Post and Pow Wow Pitch partner to support Indigenous entrepreneurs on how to effectively ship and grow their business

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition for emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced Canada Post as a Silver Sponsor to support Indigenous entrepreneurs with shipping and logistics solutions to grow their businesses.

Last year, Canada Post joined the Pow Wow Pitch trail for the first time as the competition moved online due to pandemic lockdowns. Pow Wow Pitch attracted record-number participation from Inuit, Metis and First Nations entrepreneurs across Canada by moving the competition digitally.

Canada Post supported the adjudication of the pitch competition, announcing the 3rd Prize to Maya Beaudry, Founder of Kokom Scrunchies and supporting the Pow Wow Pitch Boxes filled with Indigenous-made products to reach more than 125 customers.

“With pow wow cancellations and lockdowns, vendors have had to sell online and ship their products to their customers,” said Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch and an Annishnebeg entrepreneur and author from the Kitigan Zibi First Nation. “With Canada Post’s support, we are launching education tools to help Indigenous makers, creators, artists and entrepreneurs across Turtle Island build and optimize their shipping and logistics processes to grow.”

This year, Pow Wow Pitch has also expanded with an Indigenous Startup Program, a Podcast Series and Awards to complement the Pitch competition.

Canada Post is proud to support Pow Wow Pitch by partnering on webinars, adjudicating the pitch competition, and contributing prize dollars for winning entrepreneurs.

To learn more about the partnership, visit powwowpitch.org/canadapost.
