Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg business based in Ottawa, ON wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 9th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC and Mastercard, announced Tessa Belanger, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation Founder of Pass the Sage, a business based in Ottawa, ON, as the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Creative Semi-Final Winner. Tessa has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their business.

More than 130 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) were selected as Semi-Finalists in this year’s Pow Wow Pitch. Each received training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges, competing for the chance to advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. Twelve Creative Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and a spot in the finals.

Judges included Cameron Skura, Senior Relationship Manager at RBC; Helena Wade, Manager of Communications at Mastercard; Meagan Thompson, Director of Corporate Proposals at Altis Recruitment; Pegah Bazogh, Director of Operations at Aritzia; and Preeti Hiro, Regional Coordinator at EDC.

“When I found out, I felt overwhelmed with gratitude, excitement, and a deep sense of purpose,” said Tessa Belanger, founder of Pass the Sage. “It felt like more than a moment. I want to thank my home community of Kitigan Zibi, the Creator for guiding me, and my son Macaya, who inspires me every single day to keep pushing forward and breaking generational curses. I am also incredibly thankful to the Pow Wow Pitch team for creating a platform where our projects, stories, and dreams can come to life and be seen for the medicine they truly are.”

Tessa Belanger, founder of Pass the Sage, is an Anishinaabeg writer, educator, and community healer from Kitigan Zibi Anishinaabeg, dedicated to creating safe, supportive spaces for Indigenous storytelling, reflection, and healing. Rooted in her mission to help others feel seen, heard, and connected, Tessa blends traditional knowledge with creative expression to support community wellness. Her work includes the Pass the Sage Guided Journal, a culturally grounded resource featuring reflection prompts, teachings, and writing exercises, as well as creative writing workshops that center storytelling as a form of medicine. Through these offerings, Tessa helps Indigenous youth and community members explore identity, build resilience, and reclaim their stories.

In her pitch, Tessa shared plans to reinvest in Pass the Sage by expanding the guided journal into a multi-book series, growing her anthology collections, and offering more creative writing workshops to reach remote and underserved communities. She emphasized her commitment to community impact, with 25 percent of all revenue going back into Indigenous charities across Canada. Additional funding would support the distribution of journals to schools, libraries, and homes, provide honorariums to Indigenous collaborators and knowledge keepers, and build capacity for grassroots healing programs. Through this work, Tessa aims to deepen the reach of Pass the Sage while fostering cultural revitalization, intergenerational connection, and a collective path toward healing.

“One lesson I’ve carried is that our stories are our strength and a dream is never too big or too far fetched” says Tessa. “For other Indigenous entrepreneurs, I would say, trust your vision, lean into community, and don’t be afraid to take up space even when met with doubt. Every step forward, even the small ones, matters.”

The judges appreciated Tessa’s polished and well-prepared presentation, which clearly communicated her product, its meaningful impact, and her strong commitment to supporting Indigenous organizations and education. They were impressed by how clearly she presented the use of proceeds and admired her collaborative approach, including her partnerships with Indigenous communities.

“Congratulations to Tessa on advancing to the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Through Pass the Sage, Tessa is using storytelling as a way to support healing by creating spaces for reflection and connection. Her vision and commitment to community is what we love to celebrate at Pow Wow Pitch, entrepreneurship that is deeply rooted in love for community.”

Alongside selecting a winner, the judges also acknowledged the Runner Up for the Creative industry category. Brittany Bonaparte, Founder of Water Drum Boy, the judges appreciated the creativity and cultural significance of revitalizing the Kanien’kehá (Mohawk language) through digital design, as well as the engaging presentation showcasing drawings, products, and the inspiration behind Water Drum Boy.

“Pow Wow Pitch is an incredible showcase of Indigenous changemakers who are making a meaningful impact through their passion, creativity, and determination,” said Chinyere Eni, Head of RBC Origins. “We are so inspired by all the participants and semi-finalists – their ingenuity and perseverance to bring their innovative ideas to life is truly commendable. At RBC, we are committed to supporting their entrepreneurial journey and celebrating their successes.”

“The talent and determination showcased by this year’s Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs have been nothing short of inspiring,” said Jennifer M. Sloan, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & Policy and Stakeholder Engagement at Mastercard, Canada. “Our team at Mastercard works closely with partners like Pow Wow Pitch to break down barriers and create new opportunities for growth and economic prosperity across Canada. Congratulations to all the pitchers for sharing their ideas and stories, and a special congratulations to Tessa Belanger for advancing to the next round.”

Jamie Stevenson: Capturing culture and connection through the lens in Yellowknife

Jamie Wetrade Stevenson, a proud Tłı̨chǫ photographer from the Northwest Territories, is using the power of photography to spotlight stories that too often go unseen. Through her business, Jamie Stevenson Photography, Jamie offers full service editorial and commercial photography, managing everything from concept to final delivery. Her project management background ensures a smooth and professional experience for clients, while her lived cultural perspective brings authenticity and meaning to every frame. Jamie’s work is not just about images, it is about healing, representation, and connection.

Jamie started her photography business as a way to channel creativity into something purposeful. “I started my business to use creativity as a tool for healing, connection, and representation,” she explains. That mission has carried her forward ever since. Whether capturing the quiet strength of Indigenous matriarchs or working alongside Indigenous-led initiatives to shape visual narratives, Jamie’s work bridges the personal and the professional with intention and care. Her long term goal is bold and clear, to see her photography featured in major editorial outlets while continuing to support Indigenous organizations in defining and elevating their visual identities.

Since launching Jamie Stevenson Photography in 2018, Jamie has built a thriving business that now spans Turtle Island. Her images have been featured in magazines and national campaigns, and they have developed lasting partnerships with Indigenous-led organizations, artists, and changemakers across the country. What began as portraiture has evolved into comprehensive editorial and commercial services, with Jamie overseeing each project from start to finish. “Every step, from securing repeat clients to seeing my work published, reflects my ability to dream big, execute seamlessly, and create meaningful impact through storytelling.”

Jamie applied to Pow Wow Pitch because of what it represents, a celebration of Indigenous entrepreneurship grounded in connection, culture, and collective strength. “Seeing a community of business owners who understand the deeper meaning of entrepreneurship has always inspired me,” she shares. After years of following the initiative, Jamie felt ready to take the leap. “This past year, after restructuring my business and attending information sessions, I finally felt prepared.” Being part of Pow Wow Pitch has opened doors to mentorship, peer support, and the powerful reminder that every story matters, especially Indigenous ones.

As part of the program, Jamie was paired with Jake Carey, an RBC mentor for Pow Wow Pitch. “It was such a pleasure connecting with him,” Jamie says. “He brought thoughtful insight into refining my pitch, clarifying my value proposition, and strengthening my delivery.” Jake’s feedback came with a full set of detailed notes and the kind of encouragement that made Jamie feel truly supported. “His expertise helped me view my pitch through a more strategic lens, and his approachable nature made the process enjoyable and impactful. I am grateful for the time and care he put into supporting my journey.”

Jamie’s advice to other Indigenous entrepreneurs is rooted in humility and courage. “Just start. You do not have to have it all figured out or be perfect.” She encourages others to build something that feels meaningful, something driven by passion and purpose. “Believe in yourself. Trust that you are capable of more than you think. Everyone starts somewhere, and the first step is often the hardest, but it is also the most important.”

Reclaiming Narratives: The Visionaries Behind Reel Indian Pictures

In the rich tapestry of Native storytelling, Kelly Byars and Ramona Emerson, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and Dine Founders of Reel Indian Pictures, emerge as unsung heroes. Anchored in Albuquerque, New Mexico, these two entrepreneurs have taken on the herculean task of not only crafting authentic tales about Native communities but also empowering the next generation of storytellers.

It all began with a simple realization. “We started our business because we wanted to tell stories about Native communities and reclaim our voices,” they share, echoing a sentiment felt by many marginalized communities. “It was time for us to see our true authentic selves on the screen.”

Reel Indian Pictures is not just a film production company; it’s a beacon for authenticity and representation. With a rich history spanning nearly thirty years, they’ve dabbled in documentaries, provided essential film and video services, and ventured into educational outreach, fostering the next generation of filmmakers. Despite their vast contributions, they remain a tight-knit team of two, overseeing every project from conception to completion.

However, their pride doesn’t rest solely on their productions. Instead, they find fulfillment in mentoring. “We are the most proud of the impact that we have made on young filmmakers,” they express. Yet, every entrepreneurial journey is dotted with challenges. The duo speaks candidly about their struggles with funding, the efforts required to sustain in a competitive industry, and the aspiration to financially support their interns. “It has sometimes been hard just to make ends meet,” they admit.

Their decision to join the Pow Wow Pitch stems from a desire to innovate and secure a brighter future for the budding filmmakers under their wing. The contest, in their eyes, offers a chance to rethink their approach and expand their support network.

Inspiration often has roots in personal experiences, and for Kelly and Ramona, it’s no different. Kelly recalls the indomitable spirit of her grandmother, an educator who ventured back to college at sixty. “She always gave back to her community even when she didn’t have a lot to give,” Kelly reflects. This commitment to community and relentless spirit reverberates in their work ethos.

With a dream to hand over the baton to the younger generation, the duo is seeking avenues to create employment opportunities. “We would love to pass the torch to them and to give them the tools to work into the future,” they assert.

Among the invaluable lessons they’ve learned is the significance of seeking support. They state, “Sometimes its hard to realize that you really need help and there is someone there to help you.” Their top advice to emerging entrepreneurs is an astute one: “Invest in someone to help with finances and to help you think about financial sustainability.”

Register to watch Kelly and Ramona pitch at the Creative Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 13, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Reel Indian Pictures to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#79) before September 17, 2023.

Kristine Dandavino: A Melodic Journey of Passion and Resilience

From her community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, QC, to the bustling streets of Oshawa, Ontario, Kristine Dandavino’s resonating voice of passion and resilience sings the powerful tune of an unyielding entrepreneur. At the heart of her venture, the Oshawa Piano and Vocal Academy lies a tale of love, struggle, and profound resilience.

“When I look back at why I started, my daughter always comes to mind. She was my beacon, my north star,” Kristine begins, tracing back to her decision to leave a stable job in 2013 and plunge wholeheartedly into her business.

Kristine’s Academy is not just any music school. Her specialized training in handling students with high anxiety, ADHD, and ASD makes her an oasis of hope for many. But it’s not just about the notes; it’s about the soul. “I believe in nurturing the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of a musician. I coach not just their voices, but their hearts,” she shares, echoing the warmth she extends to each student.

Winning the Ontario Music Awards for Teacher of the Year in 2020 was no small feat, especially amidst a global pandemic. “That award was a testament to the love and support I’ve received from my students and community. Building this from scratch, that was my standing ovation,” she says with pride.

The challenges of entrepreneurship have been plentiful. But for Kristine, every hurdle is an opportunity to reevaluate, refocus, and reinvent. “Sometimes, knowing when to let go, when to step back, is essential,” she emphasizes.

Kristine’s involvement with Pow Wow Pitch has been multifaceted. While she came to win, she also cherished the camaraderie with fellow participants. Her mentors, especially Megan McAuley from RBC, taught her to be fiercely proud of her journey and the importance of clarity in communication.

Embracing her Indigenous roots, Kristine’s approach to entrepreneurship is all-encompassing. “My studio, whether virtual or in-person, is a sanctuary. A haven where love and respect reign supreme,” she explains. She believes that while there’s significant progress in accepting Indigenous entrepreneurs, the road is still long.

One of her most profound lessons? Boundaries. “It’s essential to recognize that while catering to clients is crucial, protecting one’s mental and emotional space is paramount,” she stresses.

For budding Indigenous entrepreneurs, Kristine has pearls of wisdom to share. “Start where you are, with what you have. Your reputation and genuine connections will often surpass any advertisement. And always, always listen to your clients.”

But what truly resonates is her parting note: “Believe in yourself. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely path, but remember, with every step you take, you’re creating a legacy. And if you ever doubt, know this – we all believe in you. Keep moving forward.”

Kristine Dandavino’s journey, with its highs and lows, is a beautiful symphony of perseverance. Through her Academy, she not only shapes voices but also moulds the future generation of resilient dreamers.

Register to watch Kristine pitch at the Creative Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 13, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Kristine to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#68) before September 17, 2023.

Eyeconic Warriors Prints Inc.: Crafting Change Through Art

Belonging to the Abenaki First Nation, and living in Rockland, Ontario, Brooke Stratton’s journey with Eyeconic Warriors Prints Inc. is a shining example of blending art with activism, fostering conversations, and inspiring change.

Eyeconic Warriors isn’t just a business—it’s a movement. From their diverse print sizes to the thought-provoking messages they carry, their products are designed to be more than just decorative pieces.

“We specialize in creating social justice art that not only resonates but also encourages conversations around pressing racial issues,” Brooke explains. Their prints serve as both reminders of historical milestones and catalysts for future equity. “Our art transcends aesthetics, aiming to stimulate dialogue and empathy.”

The birth of Eyeconic Warriors traces its roots to a convergence of passion and purpose. AJ Forsyth, a digital artist with an unwavering commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, saw the potential of art to spotlight racial challenges. Brooke Stratton, embodying her Abenaki First Nation as a Social Worker and a staunch advocate for social justice, brought depth and authenticity to the mission. And Duane Kumala-Thomas, with his keen artistic eye and studio expertise, recognized the potential to translate this vision into compelling visual narratives.

Being at the helm of such a venture isn’t without its challenges, of course. “Balancing creative vision with practical business strategies can be demanding,” admits Brooke. Furthermore, as a socially conscious brand, every business decision is made with its overarching mission in mind. Yet, the rewards, as she points out, are profound. “Knowing that our prints ignite conversations and inspire change is incredibly gratifying.”

Brooke’s decision to apply for the Pow Wow Pitch reflected this drive to make a difference. Brooke recalls the sense of community and invaluable guidance the platform provided, emphasizing its role in championing Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Drawing from her rich journey, Brooke offers wisdom for budding Indigenous entrepreneurs: “Stay grounded in your purpose.” For her, entrepreneurship is rooted in the lessons learned, challenges surmounted, and personal growth. “One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned,” she reflects, “is that the journey is just as valuable, if not more so, than the end results.”

Register to watch Brooke pitch at the Creative Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 13, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Brooke to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#71) before September 17, 2023.

Rebecca LaBillois: Weaving Heritage into Apitjipeg Crafts

In the heart of the Indigenous community lies a gem of craftsmanship – Apitjipeg Crafts, a beacon of tradition and ancestral craftsmanship. Owner Rebecca LaBillois, from Eel River Bar First Nation in New Brunswick, stands tall and is a torchbearer of this legacy she embraced when her mother passed away in 2013. “When I was a child, we started, and I took over the business…,” she recalls, the weight of heritage evident in her words.

Apitjipeg Crafts is a vivid tapestry of diverse indigenous artifacts – from black ash baskets and dreamcatchers to snowshoes and medicine kits. “My business is unique because we are family-based, using ‘four seasons’ as our product line,” Rebecca proudly states. She envisions a permanent establishment where the community can “buy, sell, trade, or make crafts.” Beyond being a business, Apitjipeg Crafts is a mission, focused on the “rebirth and renewal of a way of life of our ancestors.”

But what is it that Rebecca finds most rewarding? “Going to any place and taking my business with me and crafting on hand,” she elaborates. The joy, for her, lies in the “twinkle in their eye” when people, under her tutelage, craft something from scratch. Yet, entrepreneurship has not been without its challenges. “Learning the rope of online business and being able to keep up with technology,” she admits.

The Pow Wow Pitch beckoned Rebecca for its vast networking opportunities and opportunity to learn from peers. “By far, listening to the stories across Turtle Island and seeing the innovation and performance of each person online,” is what she cherishes the experience. Karanbir Singh (Harry), her mentor from RBC, transformed her perspective, helping her to “break things down to stages” and refine her vision for Apitjipeg Crafts.

Rebecca’s eyes are fixed on the broader horizons – more exposure and a physical establishment for artists. “Most people never leave the reserve with their talents that are hidden jewels stashed away,” she shares. In her eyes, every hidden talent is a treasure, deserving of the limelight.

For an Indigenous entrepreneur like Rebecca, the business is deeply intertwined with identity. “We need to be able to have a two-eye seeing approach… Combining two worlds together always to remind ourselves that we need this to stay grounded in who we are as Indigenous people,” she reflects. This philosophy is mirrored in every facet of her business, honouring past and future generations.

Through her entrepreneurial journey, Rebecca’s most vital takeaway has been the essence of financial management and bookkeeping. For budding Indigenous entrepreneurs, her advice is crystal clear: “Start out with small goals to achieve your bigger goals, and making connections is the key to success.” She extends her gratitude to those who’ve aided her journey, saying, “Without a good network, a business cannot stand alone.”

In Rebecca LaBillois and Apitjipeg Crafts, one witnesses rich tradition, entrepreneurial spirit, and an enduring commitment to community upliftment. Her journey is a testament to the power of heritage and the promise of a flourishing future.

Register to watch Rebecca pitch at the Creative Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 13, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Rachel to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#5) before September 17, 2023.

From Floral Arrangements to Vibrant Canvases: Rachel Brimacombe’s Blossoming Entrepreneurial Journey

Through her business ventures, Rachel Brimacombe paints a tale of resilience, adaptability, and a pursuit of passion. A Saskatchewan Métis, Rachel lives in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, is the founder of Lumsden Florist, and is the artistic force behind Valleyside Art.

“I started my parent company, Lumsden Florist, in 2009,” Rachel begins, recounting the inception of her initial venture. The pivot into the art world was not a deviation but a rediscovery. “During the pandemic, I rediscovered my love of painting and started Valleyside Art in 2021. It all started with an art show and spiralled from there,” she recalls.

Valleyside Art, as Rachel describes, offers a canvas of fine art paintings, both in their original and print forms. What sets her art apart is the vibrancy of its nature – “I have a unique style of painting colourful animals.” Beyond creating art, Rachel’s business ethos is to grow and give back. “I want to double my business quarterly until market saturation. This will provide more jobs in my community and be able to afford to give back through charitable donations,” she asserts.

Rachel’s journey, though painted in strokes of success, has had its shades of challenges. “All the hard work, and trying to balance work, family, farm and self-care,” she confides about the daunting tasks. Yet, when asked about the rewards, she simply states, “Seeing hard work pay off.”

Her association with Pow Wow Pitch is a testament to her belief in seizing opportunities. “You can’t succeed if you don’t try,” she reflects. The experience, according to her, has been instrumental in pushing her boundaries and dreaming bigger.

Mentorship, as Rachel acknowledges, has been a cornerstone of her journey. As part of the Pow Wow Pitch process, Rachel was mentored by Andrea Globa from Mitacs and Cristina D’Angelo from Mastercard. Their guidance ranged from tightening up her pitch to refining her approach, with Rachel gleamingly saying, “I am so honoured to be a part of this amazing Pow Wow Pitch. My cup runneth over!”

Rachel’s advice for budding Indigenous entrepreneurs is both empowering and genuine. “Do it! It’s so rewarding,” she encourages. But she also emphasizes the power of passion, stating, “Choose something you are passionate about. It will get you through the tough times.”

Through Rachel Brimacombe’s journey, we see the contours of dedication, a palette of vibrant endeavours, and a canvas that continues to evolve, inspire, and enchant.

Register to watch Rachel pitch at the Creative Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 13, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Rachel to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#112) before September 17, 2023.

Providing $50,000 in collaborative grants and prizes to boost Indigenous arts and tourism

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition and non-profit organization supporting emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced a new partnership with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) as a Silver Partner for its 2022 Pow Wow Pitch Program.

Set to support more than 2,500 Indigenous entrepreneurs in 2022 with mentorship, funding, training, marketing and a safe and trusted community of support, ITAC’s investment is helping Pow Wow Pitch to scale its virtual programs for creative and tourism entrepreneurs, re-enter communities with on-the-ground support across Canada.

ITAC will support a Virtual Creative Pitch, providing $2,500 grants, mentorship and training to ten creative Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Canada to commission mini-projects showcasing Indigenous-owned tourism businesses. The ten creative entrepreneurs will pitch to win the Creative Prize, a $15,000 grant for a larger commissioned Tourism project with ITAC, and to advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Finale for a chance to win the $25,000 Grand Prize. In addition, ITAC will present the Creative Award at the Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards, providing the winner with a $10,000 Prize.

“We are thrilled to welcome ITAC into the Pow Wow Pitch family and join together to help shine the spotlight and provide innovative support to Indigenous creative and tourism entrepreneurs and businesses across Canada,” said Sunshine Tenasco, the Founder of Pow Wow Pitch. “The partnership is an example of what can happen when Indigenous-led organizations collaborate, co-create and build capacity in the Indigenous-led economy in our own way.”

“We are so pleased to work with the Indigenous-led team at Pow Wow Pitch to provide important support to creative and tourism entrepreneurs,” said Keith Henry, President and CEO of ITAC. “As we begin our recovery for the Indigenous tourism industry, it is critical we include Indigenous creators to bring our vibrant Indigenous cultures to life from coast to coast to coast.”
