Manitoba Métis Federation & Norway House Cree Nation business based in Winnipeg, MB, wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 8th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC and Mastercard, announced Victoria Perrie and Sunday Queskekapow, the Métis and Cree Co-Founders of Kíwétinohk Consulting, a business based in Winnipeg, MB, as the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Professional Services & Trades Semi-Final Winner. Victoria and Sunday have won $1,000 and are advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their business.

More than 130 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) were selected as Semi-Finalists in this year’s Pow Wow Pitch. Each received training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges, competing for the chance to advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. Thirteen Professional Services & Trades Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and a spot in the finals.

Judges included Brayden Bumstead, Relationship Manager of Commercial Financial Services at RBC; Teodora Niculae, Senior Counsel at Mastercard; Wade Kerr, Manager of Indigenous Entrepreneurship at BDC; and Holly Brown Bear, Entrepreneur Development Officer at Joint Economic Development Initiative.

“When we found out we won, we felt gratitude and strength,” said Sunday Queskekapow, Co-Founder of Kíwétinohk Consulting. “This recognition belongs to our communities who guide and carry this work. Ékosáni, maarsí, thank you to Pow Wow Pitch, the judges, and our communities. This win drives us to keep pushing forward—healing, opening doors, and building a future where justice is shaped by our communities.”

Victoria Perrie and Sunday Queskekapow, Co-Founders of Kíwétinohk Consulting, lead an Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+-owned consultancy serving northern Manitoba and the Nunavut Arctic. Guided by the Cree word Kíwétinohk, meaning “Northwind,” their practice is dedicated to advancing justice, equity, and culturally grounded approaches across Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, and northern contexts. Their services span Gladue report writing, policy and program consulting, 2SLGBTQ+ programming, and restorative justice initiatives, each informed by Indigenous knowledge, lived experience, and a commitment to healing and community well-being.

In their pitch, Sunday highlighted Kíwétinohk Consulting’s plans to strengthen access to community-driven justice by finalizing projects and toolkits for restorative justice and reporting. With the support of Pow Wow Pitch’s funds, these resources will expand the firm’s impact, helping to bridge systemic gaps while amplifying Indigenous voices and creating practical, culturally responsive tools that foster fairness, accountability, and meaningful change.

“We’ve learned that entrepreneurship is a tool for justice, grounded in community care,” shared Sunday. “Success isn’t about standing alone—it’s about how your work helps your people, opens doors for the next generation, and brings our communities closer to healing.”

The judges commended Sunday for an impactful pitch that showcased the integration of technology and vital resources, such as legal aid, to advance their work. They highlighted the clarity and confidence of the presentation, along with Sunday’s dedication to creating practical, community-driven solutions for Indigenous justice.

Through Kíwétinohk Consulting, they are creating tools and solutions that honour Indigenous knowledge, uplift 2SLGBTQ+ voices, and open pathways to justice and healing. We’re proud to celebrate their vision as they help shape a more inclusive world.”

The judges were impressed by his passion, dedication, and the positive impact his business strives to have on the community.

Eleven Health & Wellness Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and a spot in the finals.

Judges included Rebeccah Slaunwhite, Branch Manager at RBC; Bronwen Fitzsimons, Senior Analyst of Security Resolution at Mastercard; Anthony Wingham, National Indigenous Youth Business Advisory Council Member at NACCA; and Lisa Vicaire, Founder of Algonquin Acres and 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Alumni Choice Winner.

“Advancing to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale is such an incredible honour,” said Mitchell Brant, Co-Owner of Eagle Orthopaedics. “My vision is to make prosthetic and orthotic services more accessible by creating a mobile clinic, so patients can get the care they need without transportation being a barrier. This experience has reminded me that it’s important to take chances—win or lose, there are always lessons, connections, and experiences to be proud of. I’m deeply thankful for my mentor, my support network of family and friends, and the Pow Wow Pitch community for building this amazing platform.”

Mitchell Brant, Co-Owner of Eagle Orthopaedics, leads the family-run practice with a long-standing reputation for excellence in Southeast Ontario. Since 1994, Eagle Orthopaedics has been dedicated to providing custom prosthetic and orthotic treatments including artificial limbs, orthopaedic braces, custom foot orthotics, and shoe modifications, all expertly designed and fabricated on site. The clinic continues the tradition established by James Brant by delivering high-quality, holistic care that integrates collaboration with various healthcare professionals and specialist clinics to ensure the most effective, client-centered outcomes.

In his pitch, Mitchell revealed plans to amplify Eagle Orthopaedics’ reach through the introduction of mobile services and the establishment of an additional clinic. These efforts will be supported by his competition winnings and aim to bring expert prosthetic and orthotic care directly into communities while reinforcing the brand’s accessibility and commitment to personalized, high-quality service.

Glenda Biggs: Designing support and confidence with Lippy Diva Leggings

Glenda Biggs, a proud member of Peepeekisis First Nation, is changing the way women experience compression wear through her innovative business, Lippy Diva Leggings. Based in Lloydminster, Alberta, Glenda created a ready-to-wear compression legging specifically designed for women with Lipedema, a chronic condition affecting 11% of women worldwide. As a nationally certified lymphedema therapist, Glenda brought her medical expertise into the world of fashion and design. At its heart, Lippy Diva Leggings is about delivering mobility, comfort, and confidence to women who often struggle to find garments that truly fit their bodies and needs.

From the beginning, Glenda has taken bold steps as an entrepreneur. She designed the first-of-its-kind compression leggings and secured a patent for her unique and innovative design before launching production. She also developed a specialized measurement system that ensures a near-custom fit for every customer. These strategic moves not only protect her intellectual property but also make high-quality compression garments more accessible to women who need them. These milestones mark a major accomplishment in the world of medical fashion and lay a strong foundation for long-term impact and growth.

Glenda joined Pow Wow Pitch with confidence and a clear purpose. She believed in her business and her ability to succeed. Participating in the program has pushed her beyond her comfort zone in all the best ways. She describes the experience as empowering, with highlights including strong support from the Pow Wow Pitch team, practical pitch training, and access to a network of experienced mentors. The program has helped her grow both personally and professionally, while strengthening her voice as an Indigenous entrepreneur.

One of the most impactful parts of the journey has been the mentorship. Glenda worked closely with Erin Rennie-Aubuchon, a RBC mentor, who helped her refine her pitch, answered complex financial questions, and even took the time to learn about Lipedema to offer more meaningful support. She is deeply thankful for the encouragement, knowledge, and direction her mentor provided throughout the process.

For other Indigenous entrepreneurs, Glenda offers powerful advice. “Believe in yourself, your vision, and know your voice matters,” she says. She encourages others to take the leap, trust their ideas, and understand that every step, even the difficult ones, are opportunities for growth. “Our communities are filled with creativity, resilience, and innovation,” Glenda adds. “Your idea could be the one that changes lives. Trust the process, embrace the journey, and know that your effort can inspire others.”

Glenda expresses deep gratitude to Pow Wow Pitch for the opportunity to share her work and expand her reach. “This experience has challenged me to grow, helped me build confidence, and pushed me to keep learning,” she says. “I’m truly grateful to share my vision, connect with inspiring mentors, and be part of a community that uplifts Indigenous entrepreneurs.”

Empowering Indigenous Communities: The Journey of Alana Cook and Walking Like Warriors

When Alana Cook, a Métis living in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, taught a self-defence workshop to a group of young Indigenous girls in 2017, she ignited a journey that culminated in the establishment of Walking Like Warriors. What began as a spark evolved into a mission to bridge the gap in the self-defence industry.

“Walking Like Warriors is an inclusive, empowering, and culturally safe self-defence workshop specifically intended for youth, women, and 2Spirit people from Indigenous communities,” Cook explains. The initiative’s broad spectrum of training ranges from martial arts demonstrations to practical self-defence tools, catering to people of all ages and abilities.

At the heart of Alana’s efforts is an intimate connection with her community and a desire to reciprocate the support she’s received. “Being a part of an Indigenous community is an incredible gift,” she muses, emphasizing the importance of being “respectful, reciprocal, and part of something bigger than yourself.” Through her workshops, Cook wishes to inspire the next generation to “uphold our beautiful, strong, resilient Indigenous communities.”

The alarming statistics surrounding violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada serve as a persistent reminder of the urgency of Cook’s mission. “Indigenous women and girls are three times more likely to experience violence, and six times more likely to be murdered,” she notes. The challenge of limited resources sometimes weighs on her, but she remains resolute, believing that “small actions still create large ripples.”

Alana’s ambition for Walking Like Warriors to outgrow its status as a ‘passion project’ led her to the Pow Wow Pitch. The competition offered her not just business experience but also invaluable mentorship. Her mentors, Jayden Halls and Selina, Pirmohamed from RBC were crucial in honing her narrative and infusing her pitch with authenticity. “They guided me every step of the way, and were incredibly supportive of my story,” she gratefully remarks.

Central to Alana’s teaching approach is the integration of traditional practices. “An individual’s health and wellness must maintain the balance between the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual realms,” she says, drawing parallels between the philosophies of Indigenous communities and martial artists.

Beyond the workshops, Alana’s aspirations extend into her personal journey as a professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter. “I want to be the first Métis woman to fight for a major worldwide organization,” she declares. For Alana, each fight symbolizes a battle not just for herself but for every woman in her community.

Cook’s parting wisdom for budding entrepreneurs resonates with the fierce spirit she embodies: “A closed mouth don’t get fed. You have to speak up for yourself, and never be afraid to advocate for what you need!” It’s a testament to her resilience, urging others to recognize their inner strength. “However strong you think you are, you are stronger.”

Alana Cook’s journey with Walking Like Warriors showcases a powerful fusion of community, purpose, and resilience. As she continues to empower Indigenous communities, her story serves as a beacon for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.

Register to watch Alana pitch at the Health and Wellness Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 8, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Walking Like Warriors to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#115) before September 17, 2023.

Carissa shared, “It is important for me to know the source of an ingredient and that it was utilized in a good way through intention and ceremony.”

WoW, registered in 2020, presents a melange of products that echo Carissa’s journey of self-healing and rediscovery of culture. It is an award-winning holistic wellness brand bridging the gap between physical and spiritual by honouring Medicine Wheel Teachings. Its offerings, from whipped body butter to Reiki-infused wood-burned combs, each come with a ‘hidden gem,’ a crystal inside, symbolizing a deeper spiritual connection.

Having won 15 community awards in just three years, Carissa’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. Carissa mused, “Being recognized in my community has been an amazing support. Building and growing a supportive community in a healing space has been rewarding both professionally and personally.”

But every success story isn’t without challenges. For Carissa, the unpredictability of entrepreneurship posed the most significant hurdles. “There is not a steady paycheck to rely on,” she expressed. “It has pushed me to be creative, resourceful, and to develop a new relationship with money.”

Pow Wow Pitch, however, presented itself as a guiding light. “This year, I kept hearing about Pow Wow Pitch in random places as well as spaces of alignment,” Carissa shared, attributing her decision to participate to serendipitous nudges and the unwavering support from her mentor and late best friend.

Through the her Pow Wow Pitch journey, Carissa was paired with two mentors. Clara Price from RBC, encouraged her to “share more of my story to connect with their hearts.” This counsel became the backbone of Carissa’s communication strategy, enabling her to forge a deeper connection with her audience. From there, Johannes Valdes from Shopify, advised Carissa to stand while practicing her pitch, emphasizing that it would help her feel more comfortable and dissipate any anxious energy. Taking this advice to heart, Carissa felt a notable shift in her demeanor, carrying herself with more confidence and authenticity. These invaluable insights from her mentors not only honed her business strategies but also enriched her personal growth journey.

At its core, Carissa’s entrepreneurial experience underscores the importance of interconnection. “WoW offers an inclusive, family-focused, holistic approach,” she highlighted. “Building relationships and genuine connections are the most important. Relationship to each other, self, plants, products, materials, processes, etc.”

For budding entrepreneurs, Carissa’s advice is profoundly spiritual and grounded: “You can decolonize your business and do what feels right and is in alignment with your values.” She encourages authenticity, urging entrepreneurs to “stay connected to passion and purpose” and to perceive rejection as guidance from the Creator.

In a world striving for balance and wellness, Carissa Beresford’s Waterfall of Wellness is not just a brand—it’s a philosophy, a journey of spiritual discovery and a testament to the power of genuine intent.

Register to watch Carissa pitch at the Health and Wellness Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 8, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Waterfall of Wellness to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#116) before September 17, 2023.

Empowering Wellness Through Tradition: Spotlight on Shelly Marie Perley of JUMI’s Wellness

The journey of Mi’kmaq entrepreneur Shelly Marie Perley, the Founder of JUMI’s Wellness from Esgenoopetitj, New Brunswick, is a story of resilience, tradition, and transformative vision.

At JUMI’s Wellness, the entrepreneurial approach is as holistic as the products themselves. JUMI’s Wellness craft blends tailored to individual needs and sensitivities, integrating traditional medicines, and practices passed down by elders through meaningful product and therapeutic services. “We love to share our culture any way we can, whether in our spaces or on the land,” she explains.

“When I incorporated essential oils, natural and traditional medicines for myself and my family over the past six years, I witnessed their profound impact physically, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally,” recalls Shelly. Motivated by the opioid crisis plaguing her community, her mission became clear. “I want to help people reconnect with themselves, mother earth, and find their inner light.”

For Shelly, infusing her Indigenous roots into her business is paramount. “As a Wabanki educator and mother of three Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey children, I try to incorporate our style and traditions in many aspects of our lives. Identity is vital to one’s balance and wholeness.”

However, for Shelly, entrepreneurship isn’t without its challenges, especially in the realms of technology and finance. “I’m learning the technology, and the financial part. I am doing it!” That’s why participating in Pow Wow Pitch was an unexpected turning point. “I was in shock and sometimes still feel like, ‘Is this really happening?’

Shelly’s mentorship journey was enriched by individuals like Laura Englehart from JEDI and Jon Ferguson from CIRA. From them, she learned the nuances of articulating her business vision effectively.

Her advice to budding Indigenous entrepreneurs is both simple and profound. “Lead from your heart and make sure you enjoy what you do. There will be many roadblocks, but a drive and passion for the work will help push you through. Be yourself and open to trying new things. As long as there is passion for it, there is a will and a way.”

In Shelly Marie Perley, we see the confluence of tradition, passion, and the indomitable spirit of entrepreneurship. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of belief, legacy, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

Register to watch Shelly pitch at the Health & Wellness Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 8, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Shelly to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#45) before September 17, 2023.

From Horse’s Wisdom to Indigenous Enterprise: Shannon Carroll’s Equine Healing Journey

Burrden Acres isn’t just a business; it’s a sanctuary where the majestic energy of horses interlaces with the Indigenous spirit. Shannon Carroll, the Sagamok Anishnawbek Owner, Operator, and Certified Equine Facilitator at Burrden Acres, living in Massey, Ontario, finds her purpose in sharing the transformative power of equines with her community.

“I wanted to share the power of the horse,” Shannon confides, reminiscing about the force that drove her to set up Burrden Acres. “Knowing first-hand the benefits of having an equine in your presence had me so passionate about wanting to help my horses help others.”

Burrden Acres was conceived not just as a venture, but as a means to offer a culturally rich healing. Situated amidst nature, this unique organization provides an ‘on-the-land, out-of-office’ therapeutic environment. Drawing from the Seven Grandfather Teachings and the Medicine Wheel, Shannon’s curriculum has been a beacon of hope for many. She says, “Most of our clients leave feeling a deeper connection with not only their paired equine but also themselves.”

Shannon’s entrepreneurial journey, however, hasn’t been without challenges. She touches upon the struggles of supporting people to understand the benefits of equine-assisted learning and counselling. “Educating those who truly do not understand… how it works,” she states, has been one of her primary hurdles. But resilience runs deep, as she acknowledges the wisdom imparted by her mentors, Jon Ferguson from CIRA and Jayden Halls from RBC. “Regardless of my struggles, I am helping others,” she quotes Jon. “The absolute best part of being a part of Pow Wow Pitch is the new relationships I have gained,” she mentions with palpable enthusiasm.

To budding Indigenous entrepreneurs, Shannon has words of wisdom and encouragement, “Get out of your head.” She emphasizes that dreaming is just the start – taking decisive action is what truly brings dreams to fruition.

At the heart of Burrden Acres is a message that Shannon feels deeply about: “Leave the burden at the gate™.” It isn’t merely a saying, but a testament to the sanctuary she’s created where one can let go, heal, and find strength in the gentle gaze of her equine companions.

Register to watch Shannon pitch at the Health and Wellness Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 8, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Shannon to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#14) before September 17, 2023.

Studio Self Worth: Samantha Day’s Odyssey to Empower Indigenous Voices

The journey of Samantha Day, Founder and CEO of Studio Self Worth, belonging to Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation and living in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is one of resilience and self-discovery.

Studio Self Worth provides online training, coaching and a 12-week program to support her clients reclaim their voice.

Leaving home at just thirteen and becoming a mother by sixteen, Samantha’s early years were marked by immense challenges. She reveals, “I am the survivor of youth trafficking, and through that, I lost my voice.” However, it’s not the adversity but her triumphant response to it that defines Samantha and her mission.

Samantha’s goal is to help others find or reclaim their voice. “These last few years have been about growth and self-discovery. My passion is enriching the lives of indigenous women, men, and youth,” said Samantha.

Samantha’s vision for Studio Self Worth goes beyond just coaching. As an Indigenous entrepreneur, she seeks to integrate traditional, holistic healing methodologies into her offerings. “I want to provide training sessions on traditional ways of healing our mind, body, and soul,” Samantha said, sharing her aspirations of introducing herbal medicine from the Center for World Indigenous Studies. She also plans to introduce art workshops, such as beading and creating medicine bags, fostering creativity and connectivity.

The rewards of her entrepreneurial venture are deeply personal. Being able to set her own work hours, she can be there for her daughter, making up for the times when her youth support work required long, irregular shifts. Yet, challenges persist. Samantha admits, “Getting used to public speaking was tough because I’ve always been known as the quiet and awkward girl.”

The Pow Wow Pitch presented an opportunity for her to further step out of her comfort zone. “I love our people and don’t have a large support system. This year has been about growth, and this experience reflects that growth,” she explains. Her mentor, Jon Ferguson from CIRA has been instrumental in refining her business approach, advising her to focus on her online services rather than opening a physical studio to begin.

Samantha remarks on the most profound lesson she’s gleaned from her entrepreneurial journey, “I am right where I am supposed to be.” And to those Indigenous individuals considering entrepreneurship, she has a straightforward message: “Just start.” She emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, urging aspiring entrepreneurs to seize every available workshop opportunity, such as the JEDI entrepreneur programs.

In closing, Samantha encapsulates her ethos and vision for Studio Self Worth in a simple yet profound invitation: “Let’s create a life you can’t wait to wake up to.” Through her story and business, Samantha is not just waking up to a new day; she’s also awakening countless others to their worth and potential.
