<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards recognize and celebrate excellence and outstanding impact in Indigenous entrepreneurship by recognizing entrepreneurial leaders for their perseverance, growth, impact, and example.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch, hosted the event, which featured a special opening by Inuit throat singers, Tamara Takpannie and Janice Oolayou, from Iqaluit, Nunavut, and ten Award presentations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that entrepreneurship is as much about resilience as it is about innovation,” shared Ivy Richardson. “As Indigenous entrepreneurs, we don&#8217;t just navigate the typical challenges of business. We carry the weight of systemic barriers that our communities have faced for generations, yet we persist.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ivy Richarson is from the Quatsino and Nuxalk Nations, operating her non-profit organization on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, centered around movement as medicine. <a href="https://redgirlrising.com/">Red Girl Rising</a>’s mission is to collaborate with communities to develop empowering and accessible movement programs, camps, and workshops to unlock their full potential and thrive. Ivy has created and facilitated over 300 movement initiatives since Red Girl Rising&#8217;s inception in 2019 and continues to empower and build confidence in surrounding communities.</p>

As Lead Consultant, Beatrice’s strategic vision to build companies from the inside out has left a profound impact on bridging the gaps identified in small businesses.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I am really grateful to Pow Wow Pitch for this incredible honour and thank you to my community. It is such an honour to be recognized and validated as an entrepreneur,” shared Crystle Lightning. “It was really important to create these opportunities and space in the entertainment industry for not only ourselves but for Indigenous people everywhere. I want to encourage all of the young people that anything is possible, chase it down.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Crystle Lightning is from the Enoch Cree Nation, and has been a trailblazer in Indigenous representation and leadership in the entertainment industry for over 30 years. She is the co-creator, director, and star of <a href="https://beargreaselive.com/"><em>Bear Grease</em></a>, an acclaimed all Indigenous musical that reimagines the 1978 classic <em>Grease</em> with an Indigenous twist. <em>Bear Grease</em> has toured across Canada and the U.S., earning praise for its humour and the vibrant Indigenous spirit. Crystle’s work on <em>Bear Grease</em> reflects her dedication to creating space for Indigenous voices and stories, leading the way for greater visibility and opportunities in the arts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Lesley Hampton, Artist &amp; Fashion Designer (Toronto, ON)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://lesleyhampton.com/">Lesley Hampton</a> is an Anishinaabe artist and fashion designer from Temagami First Nation who is focused on mental wellness and body neutrality in fashion through an Indigenous lens. Lesley has scaled her brand as a retailer to provide a wide range from luxury designs, athleisure, jewelry, and custom designs. Her unique blend of traditional and modern designs has positioned her as a leader in Indigenous fashion. As a brand, Lesley Hampton has showcased at Fashion Weeks around the world, and Indigenous Fashion Arts Festivals, and has also dressed celebrities for red carpets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Our vision is to go all across Turtle Island and for Teqare to be a household name that people can trust,” shared Darion Ducharme. “I received this award with the belief that it is possible for everyone, no matter your background or situation. The Creator has a plan, a purpose for your life, and you can accomplish anything that is in your heart.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Darion Ducharme is the Lac Seul First Nation Founder of <a href="http://teqare.ca">Teqare</a>, a 100% Indigenous-owned and operated technology training company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Darion is accompanied by a growing team of Indigenous youth and shares his entrepreneurial journey with co-founder Zachary Flett from Sagkeeng First Nation. Darion has spearheaded initiatives such as scam prevention workshops for elders, both in urban and rural Indigenous communities across Canada. In 2024, Darion secured contracts to visit rural northern Indigenous communities to expand tech safety training to elementary schools and community centres, expanding Teqare’s impact.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Kelsey Deer, Founder of KEL Tech Gear (Kahnawà:ke, QC)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;It means so much to me to receive this award,” shared Kelsey Deer. “I never had a hard launch on my business, instead I started slowly in my community, and I am so grateful for their support of me and my business. To anyone who has supported me on this journey, I’m so grateful.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke, Kelsey Deer is a designer, seamstress, and the Founder of <a href="https://kel-tech-gear.myshopify.com/">KEL Tech Gear</a>. Based on the Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory in Quebec, Kelsey’s brand has been hitting milestones as a growing leader in Indigenous design and accessories. Since launching KEL Tech Gear in 2020, Kelsey’s bags have been a hit, selling out at local vendor markets and powwows. Her designs are praised for their handmade quality and bright customizable colours.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Jennifer Ashton, Owner of Jenn Ashton Art (Robert’s Creek, BC)</strong></p>

Embrace the highs and lows because it will always be your story to share, and our stories connect us all, so keep telling your story. Walk in gratitude always.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://jenniferashton.ca/">Jennifer Ashton</a> is an Award-winning Sḵwx̱wú7mesh author, visual artist, and filmmaker based in Robert&#8217;s Creek, British Columbia. Her contributions to the education and entertainment industries have pushed the boundaries of Indigenous representation. Jenn has contributed to various Indigenous film projects such as the Academy Award Nominated “Killers Of The Flower Moon” and her own short film, “What the Dirt Don&#8217;t Like.” As a successful author, Jenn is also published in multiple journals, articles, and Canadian textbooks, contributing to the landscape of Indigenous literature and education. Today, Jenn offers mentorship and programming to her community to share her knowledge in the visual art, writing, and filmmaking industries.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Priscilla Boulay, Artist &amp; Operator of Inuvialuit Carvers (Calgary, AB)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;There is nothing more fulfilling than passing along my Dad’s legacy and our rich culture to my children and to others as an educator,&#8221; shared Priscilla Boulay. “I am living my passion every day as a mother, carver, and teacher. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my husband. I extend my heartfelt thanks to my family, mentors, and to all of my supporters. Thank you to Pow Wow Pitch and partners for all that you do to uplift our Indigenous communities that have provided for me and many others the platform to share our stories and talents.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coming from a long line of Inuvialuit carvers from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Priscilla Boulay has grown her family&#8217;s practice to be shared with surrounding communities and those looking to learn the tradition of Inuvialuit carving. <a href="https://inuvialuitcarvers.com/">Inuvialuit Carvers</a> is a collection of Priscilla’s family members, the descendants of Bobby Taylor Pokiak, the original carver in the Taylor family, and has since successfully passed the craft to three generations of carvers. Today, Inuvialuit Carvers is based in Calgary, Alberta and offers presentations and carving lessons to keep the craft alive with her community.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Lori Finders, CEO of Binesiwag Center for Wellness (Couchiching First Nation, ON)</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I want to extend my deepest thanks to my work family at Binesiwag Centre for Wellness, who are truly heart workers and are incredibly gifted Anishinaabekwe,&#8221; shared Lori Flinders. “Our Anishinaabe ways of being helpers is a sacred responsibility. It’s a path that requires humility, compassion and deep connection to our community and traditions. These values have guided me in this work and have also helped me in passing that knowledge bundle forward.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lori Flinders from Couchiching First Nation, is a published author in wellness from an Anishinaabe worldview and has published an Indigenous mental health and addictions leading practice with Accreditation Canada. Her expertise offers 20 years of leadership, management, program development, leading best practices, and mentorship. The <a href="https://www.binesiwagwellness.com/">Binesiwag Centre for Wellness</a> is an organization focused on providing a variety of wellness services across the lifespan, including inclusive support for addictions, women, and 2SLGBTQ+. Lori is leaving behind a legacy of empowered and healed individuals through re-membering and re-matriating systems with traditional ceremony, land-based learning, and addiction programs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Kristopher Morrison, Founder of Indigenous Men’s Alliance (Moose Cree Nation, ON)</strong></p>

When we uplift our men, we uplift our families, our communities, and our future generations. I want to encourage all my relations to bring your ideas forward to uplift our communities and Nations.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kristopher Morrison from Moose Cree Nation, founded the Indigenous Men&#8217;s Alliance, a network that has echoed a nation-wide call for men’s mental health amongst Indigenous communities. The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/indigenousmensalliance">Indigenous Mens Alliance</a> creates brave spaces where Indigenous men can support one another in overcoming challenges and celebrating their identities and accomplishments. Using traditional and land-based approaches, the Indigenous Men’s Alliance provides quality programs that foster and encourage men to embrace their heritage and build strong, positive relationships within their communities.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island win $45,000 in prizes</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/">Pow Wow Pitch</a>, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with <a href="https://www.rbc.com/indigenous/">RBC</a>, <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/shopify/">Shopify</a>, and <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a>, announced Dr. Shyra Barberstock, Co-Founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.proudlyindigenous.com/">Kebaonish Inc.</a>, as the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Winner and the recipient of the Grand Prize of $25,000.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Grand Finale was hosted by Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch, and featured Indigenous entrepreneurs from Nations across Turtle Island like the Choctaw, Cree, Anishinaabe, Maliseet, Inuit, Métis, Native Hawaiian, Lakota, and Mohawk.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following a qualifying <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/semi-finalists">Semi-Final</a> round, the top 20 Indigenous entrepreneurs, from more than 300 applications from across Turtle Island, went head-to-head pitching their businesses to an esteemed panel of <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/judges/">Judges</a> who scored and selected the Grand Finale winners.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 2024 Judges included <strong>Herb ZoBell</strong>, Vice President of Commercial Financial Services at <a href="https://www.rbc.com/indigenous/">RBC</a>; <strong>Kyle Brennan Shàwinipinesì</strong>, Senior Lead of Indigenous Entrepreneurship at <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/shopify/">Shopify</a>; <strong>Kate Karn</strong>, Director of Public Policy at <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a>; the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Winner <strong>Ashley Michel</strong>, Founder and Owner of <a href="https://4generationscreations.ca/">4 Generations Creations</a>; and the 2022 Pow Wow Pitch Winner <strong>Erica Daniels</strong>, Founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.kejicproductions.com/">Kejic Productions</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>MEET THE WINNERS</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>First Place Prize of $25,000</strong> presented by <a href="https://www.rbc.com/indigenous/">RBC</a> went to Dr. Shyra Barberstock, Co-Founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.proudlyindigenous.com/">Kebaonish Inc.</a>, from Kebaowek First Nation in Quebec. Kebaonish Inc. is an Indigenous and woman-led coffee and tea company based in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario that highlights the spirit of sharing in Indigenous cultures and communities worldwide. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfhC7ATgzgU&amp;t=1120s">Watch Shyra’s pitch</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Winning Pow Wow Pitch is both a personal achievement and a significant milestone for Kebaonish,” shared <strong>Shyra Barberstock, Co-Founder and CEO of Kebaonish Inc</strong>. “Our company embodies the spirit of the Indigenous economy and highlights the importance of Indigenous businesses entering new markets. Ultimately, this success is about creating a ripple effect—where our achievements benefit not only our business but also strengthen our communities and inspire the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shyra plans to use her $25,000 grand prize to invest in her brand and community by creating job opportunities and launching a give-back program. Shyra has a goal to be one of the main leaders in the coffee and tea industry, expanding their reach with Indigenous art at each step of the way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“My advice to emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs is to stay true to your values and your community,” reflects Shyra. “Remember, your unique perspective as an Indigenous entrepreneur is your strength—use it to innovate and create positive change.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shyra expresses her gratitude for her accomplishment to her community, team, mentors, and support networks. “I want to express my profound gratitude to my Kebaonish Co-Founder team—Rye Barberstock, Barry Hillier, John Snell, and Mike Carrick. I feel fortunate to have such an exceptional team—your friendship, support, and dedication mean the world to me. Additionally, I would like to thank our First Nations communities—Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte (Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory) and Kebaowek First Nation—who have been incredible cheerleaders and supporters throughout this journey. Finally, I offer my sincere thanks to the family and friends who have tirelessly supported my team and me along the way. Your belief in our vision has been a constant source of inspiration.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Second Place Prize of $10,000</strong> presented by <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/shopify/">Shopify</a> went to Dolly Kruger, Founder of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/silverskycasket/">SilverSky Cradle &amp; Casket</a> from Snpintk’tn Indian Band in British Columbia. SilverSky Cradle &amp; Casket is a funeral arrangement service that offers personalized, hand-crafted caskets and urns that incorporate Indigenous traditions and practices to honour passed loved ones. Dolly is a carpenter by trade and created SilverSky after the unfortunate passing of her son and having no traditional services to turn to. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Being a winner to me means continuously showing up to do work. I hope to impact the way Indigenous people are represented within the funeral industry in Canada,” shared <strong>Dolly Kruger, Founder of SilverSky Cradle &amp; Casket</strong> . “One thing I would like to say to Indigenous entrepreneurs is that we each have a calling so continue reaching for the stars, know you are making a difference, and continue being the change our ancestors prayed for.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Third Place Prize of $5,000</strong> presented by <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a> went to Darion Ducharme from LacSeul First Nation and Zachary Flett from Sagkeeng First Nation, Co-Founders of <a href="http://teqare.ca">Teqare</a>. Teqare is an Indigenous-owned and operated company based in Manitoba, offering technology training, education, and support with a focus on our nation’s most vulnerable. Darion and Zachary have spearheaded initiatives such as scam prevention workshops for all ages, both urban and rural communities across Canada. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Winning third place for Pow Wow Pitch is a significant milestone for us at Teqare,” shared <strong>Darion Ducharme, Founder of Teqare</strong>. “It’s not just about recognition; it affirms that our vision and the work we are doing for Indigenous communities are impactful and necessary. Moving forward, we aim to expand our reach, continuing to empower Indigenous peoples through digital literacy, financial education, and scam prevention.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Echoing Darion, <strong>Zachary Flett, Co-Founder of Teqare</strong> continues, “Our most memorable experience was connecting with other Indigenous entrepreneurs. The sense of community and support from everyone involved really stood out. Hearing their stories and sharing my own created a powerful space of encouragement. It’s not just a competition—it’s a platform for all of us to learn, grow, and elevate each other.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>ALUMNI CHOICE&nbsp;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>Alumni Choice Prize of $5,000</strong> was presented on behalf of Pow Wow Pitch Alumni by 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Winner, Ashley Michel, to Lisa Vicaire, Founder of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/algonquinacres/">Algonquin Acres</a>. Algonquin Acres is an equestrian therapy centre that hosts riding programs and clinics. Lisa started Algonquin Acres in 2022 and was inspired to bring her dream to life after witnessing the transformative impact equine therapy had for her own daughter’s health. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Winning Pow Wow Pitch’s Alumni prize means so much, I look up to the Alumni and their hard work and success, and was so thankful they chose to support my business,” shared <strong>Lisa Vicaire, Founder of Algonquin Acres</strong>. “I hope to impact the children I work with in a positive way with memories they can hold onto for a lifetime, memories they made right at home in the community.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lisa shares a piece of advice to Indigenous entrepreneurs thinking about participating in future competitions, “It can be so scary to jump into something unknown like a pitch competition, but just know you have the support from all other competitors, your community, and so many others waiting to encourage you! You can do this!”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On September 16th, <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/">Pow Wow Pitch</a>, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/rbc/">RBC</a>, <a href="https://www.shopify.com/powwowpitch">Shopify</a> and <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a>, announced Darion Ducharme &amp; Zachary Flett, the Lac Seul and Sagkeeng First Nations Co-Founders of <a href="https://www.teqare.ca/">Teqare</a>, a business based in Winnipeg, Manitoba as the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Technology Semi-Final Winners. Darion and Zachary, winners of the Technology Semi-Finals, presented by <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a>, have won $1,000 and are advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their business.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More than 300 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. From the 300 applicants, 100 were selected as <a href="http://powwowpitch.org/semi-finalists">Semi-Finalists</a> and provided with training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/judges/">Judges.</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last night, five Technology Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and advance as a finalist.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Judges included <strong>Amisha Parikh</strong>, Vice President of Product Management, Cyber &amp; Intelligence Solutions at <a href="https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca.html">Mastercard Canada</a>;<strong> Jayden Halls</strong>, Manager of Project Portfolio Management at <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/rbc/">RBC</a>; <strong>Sydney Piggott</strong>, Senior Social Impact Manager at <a href="https://shopifyindigenous.com/">Shopify</a>; <strong>Scott Tizzard</strong>, Senior Relationship Manager at <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/edc/">EDC</a>; and <strong>Samantha Mann, </strong>Senior Product Communications Specialist at <a href="https://www.powwowpitch.org/about/partners/cira/">CIRA</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Zachary and I are deeply grateful to the incredible community that supports us and empowers us to do what we love every day,” shared <strong>Darion Ducharme, Owner and Co-Founder of Teqare</strong>. “We plan to invest in professional videography to capture one of our scam prevention workshops, particularly one where we assist elders on First Nations. This content will help us showcase the real-world impact of our work and strengthen our outreach to more Nations across Turtle Island.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“One key lesson we’ve learned is that no business idea is too small to make a significant impact,” reflected Darion and Zachary. “Our advice to Indigenous entrepreneurs is to find a mentor who can provide guidance and support. Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams &#8211; your passion and dedication will drive success, especially when rooted in community.”</p>
