On September 19th, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify and Mastercard, announced Jasmine LaBillois, the Eel River Bar First Nation Founder of Msit No’kmaq Forest & Nature School from Eel River Bar, New Brunswick, as the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch People’s Choice Winner.

More than 2,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Canada and the United States applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Finals. From the 2,000 applicants, 130 were selected as Semi-Finalists and provided with training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges.

As part of the competition, Pow Wow Pitch invited the public to vote for their favourite entrepreneur to win the People’s Choice Prize as part of a campaign to showcase, celebrate and rally around the Semi-Finalists. This year, more than 18,000 people from across Turtle Island casted their votes for the entrepreneur that they wanted to see make it to the Finals. 

Jasmine has won $1,000 and has advanced to the Finals after receiving more than 2,500 of the more than 18,000 votes as part of the Pow Wow Pitch People’s Choice Prize.

“I decided to pitch because I saw it as an opportunity to grow Msit No’kmaq Forest & Nature School,” said Jasmine. “Pow Wow Pitch gives Indigenous entrepreneurs a platform to share with others your dreams, goals and passions. Our goal is to expand our Forest School initiative to welcome both young and adult learners and be a leader in the movement of Indigenous Land-Based Education.” 

Msit No’kmaq Forest & Nature School is a non-profit organization that offers land-based education and cultural camps that provide a safe and inclusive space to teach Indigenous youth Mi’kmaq knowledge. Jasmine pitched to win funds to further develop her school’s infrastructure and programming.

Pow Wow Pitch Alumni select up to three Semi-Finalists who they believe have the potential to win Pow Wow Pitch to advance to the Finals. Each entrepreneur has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their businesses.

“This is our first time pitching for Pow Wow Pitch,” said Ramona Emerson, Co-Founder of Reel Indian Pictures. “With these winnings, we would offer paid internships to young filmmakers in our local community to teach the ins and outs of documentary filmmaking and prepare them for a career in the film industry.”

Reel Indian Pictures is an Indigenous-owned and operated film and video production company with over 20 years of experience in the industry. With a focus on community engagement, Reel Indian Pictures works extensively with local grassroots organizations in New Mexico to raise awareness about social issues, and also contributes to educational initiatives by teaching filmmaking to Indigenous youth.

Spotlight on Sharon Marshall

“I pitched at the Kamloopa Pow Wow Pitch this Summer, and while I didn’t win, I was grateful for the experience,” said Sharon Marshall, Founder and CEO of Digital DEVA. “I chose to pitch this year because I wanted to hone my pitch for investors. Plus $25,000 would enable me to sponsor a cohort of Indigenous women into my program. Every cohort I can train provides the social proof I need to show the world that DEVA is viable and has the ability to impact so many women, their families, and their communities. ”

Digital DEVA is a full-service staffing agency providing temporary recruitment, as well as digital literacy and administrative training for Indigenous women. Founded by Sharon Marshall, Digital DEVA teaches and prepares Indigenous women seeking employment through self confidence, financial independence and skills training. Through Sharon’s programming, she has been able to support all graduates in gaining employment.

Spotlight on Ashley Michel

“I chose to pitch again this year because I want a better future for my daughter and the generations to come,” said Ashley Michel, Founder and CEO of 4 Generations Creations. “No obstacle is too big to overcome if you believe in yourself. I want the youth to see all of us succeed and realize that they could do that one day too.”

Ashley Michel is the artist and owner behind 4 Generations Creations, a market for authentic Indigenous fabrics, materials, and art. 4 Generations Creations aims to create designs that educate others about Indigenous issues & resiliency through apparel and art. Ashley has created a platform through a social media following to further share her message. Ashley shared in her pitch that she wishes to purchase her own direct to garner machine to bring her production in-house and in turn, open opportunities to hire a team from her community.

• Fashion Shoes & Accessories Winner: Jason Picard-Binet, the Huron Wendat President of Bastien Industries from Wendake, Quebec.

Each entrepreneur has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their businesses. Fashion Apparel Semi-Final Spotlight

Jaret Smith, Founder of Unparalleled Clothing Company was honoured as the Runner Up of the Fashion Apparel Category and received an Aritzia Runner Up Fashion Grant of $1,000.

Fashion Design Semi-Final Spotlight

“My grandpa was one of our last elders, and each summer I would go on the powwow trail and help him,” said fashion designer and vetran Dante Biss-Grayson, Founder of Sky-Eagle Collection. “I came home from the war and started Sky-Eagle Collection with my family to celebrate and showcase our powwow traditions with my community and global runways.”

Sky-Eagle Collection is an Indigenous fashion house based in Taos, New Mexico, that celebrates the beauty of Indigenous culture and is committed to pushing the boundaries of Indigenous art by combining traditional with contemporary art styles. Dante pitched to expand his impact by designing and supplying uniforms for the casino industry and transitioning to in-community manufacturing to create more opportunities for local Indigenous people.

Raphaëlle Langevin, Founder of Matsheshu Créations, was honoured as the Runner Up for the Fashion Design Category and received an Aritzia Fashion Grant of $1,000. In addition, the judges provided an Honourable Mention to Wyatt Miller, Founder of Sparked Apparel.

Fashion Shoes & Accessories SemiFinal Spotlight

“As a former ITAC employee, I’ve always admired the work of the Pow Wow Pitch team,” said Jason Picard-Binet, Owner of Bastien Industries. “In April 2022, I decided to put an end to my career in tourism to pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. When I bought Bastien Industries, it was clear to me that I was going to try out for the Pow Wow Pitch.”

Bastien Industries is a moccasin manufacturing company, originally founded in 1972 by the Bastien family and is owned today by Jason Picard-Binet. Bastien Industries crafts moccasins that represent the heritage of the Wendat people. Bastien Industries has taken strides to give back to the community through employment opportunities, sourcing everything locally, and a program that supports women reentering the workforce from the criminal justice system. Jason pitched to win funds to support him to scale digital marketing activities to grow online sales.

Jacob has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow his business.

More than 2,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Canada and the United States applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Finals. “I decided to pitch my innermost childhood dreams because I knew if I did, I might be able to inspire someone who struggled like I did,” said Jacob Cyr, Founder of Treaty Four Tech. “I know many more will pursue a future in tech and I want them to know that everything they can think of is doable.”

Jacob Cyr is the innovative visionary behind the virtual reality and 3D storytelling model, Treaty Four Tech. Treaty Four Tech is an immersive VR experience that offers original stories and comic books such as Jacob Cyr’s, Homer The Dog. Jacob shared in his pitch that he wishes to fully establish his games on his own website and to expand to other game developers. “My winnings are going to bring the tech needed to launch this technical art and media service along with my games,” said Jacob. “When my platform launches I look forward to the exciting challenge of getting more voices and stories out there.”

Tyler Leslie, Founder of PowwowPaint, was honoured as the Runner Up of the Startup Ideas Semi-Final. In addition, the judges provided two Honourable Mentions to Jett Burden, Founder of Sacred Trails and Todd Pruden, Founder of Syllabatics.

On September 14, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify, and Mastercard, announced Simon Monteith, the Opaskwayak Cree Nation Founder of Simon the Scientist from Winnipeg, Manitoba, as the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Youth Winner. Simon Monteith has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow his business.

More than 2,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Canada and the United States applied to Pow Wow Pitch this year for their chance to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Finals. From the 2,000 applicants, 130 were selected as Semi-Finalists and provided with training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges.

Last night, Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch, emceed the action-packed program, where the five Youth Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their budding businesses and community initiatives in one minute for their chance to win.

Judges included Tracy Antoine, Senior Director of Indigenous Programs and Policies at RBC; Kyle Brennan Shàwinipinesì, Build Native Program Manager at Shopify; Bea Jimenez, Senior Specialist of Product Management and Product Owner at Mastercard; Noah Wilson, Senior Business Development Manager at Futurpreneur; and Sarah Aghvami, Director of Best Buy Health at Best Buy Canada. 

“I had lots of fun last year with Pow Wow Pitch and I wanted to try it again,” said Simon Monteith, Creator of Simon the Scientist. “Pow Wow Pitch gave me a lot of knowledge and ideas to help my business get a kick start. The competition also helped me get into the news and increased my outreach and opportunities. I really enjoyed how nice everyone in the Pow Wow Pitch community is!”

Simon Monteith, the ten-year-old, Opaskwayak Cree, is the online creator behind Simon the Scientist. Simon began sharing science experiments at home in 2020 and since then has created the social media presence of Simon the Scientist known across Turtle Island. He is inspiring Indigenous youth through his science experiments, live streams, and educational videos. Simon plans to expand the impact of Simon the Scientist by incorporating merchandise with designs from Indigenous artists.

Cambria Wichmann, Founder of Resilience Rising, was honoured as the Runner Up for the Youth Semi-Final. In addition, the judges also provided an Honourable Mention to Kiera Tootoosis, Founder of Bear Hugs. 

In addition, Pow Wow Pitch also announced the recipients of the 2023 Tech-4-Youth Technology Grants, in partnership with Best Buy Canada, to nine Indigenous youth. All youth pitchers and several youth Alumni of Pow Wow Pitch, were announced to receive free tech from Best Buy to support them in moving their businesses forward. Cole Clark has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow his business.

Last night, Keely Thompson-Cook, Communications Coordinator of Pow Wow Pitch and Founder of Strawberry Seeds Designs, emceed the action-packed program, where the seven Creative Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their businesses and community initiatives in one minute for their chance to win.

Judges included Ashley Phillips, Branch Manager at  RBC; Kyle Brennan Shàwinipinesì, Build Native Program Manager at Shopify; Zhamila Zhakup, Associate Managing Consultant, Advisors Client Services at Mastercard; Tara Saunders, Director of Business Development at Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada; and Ivy Truong, Director of Art and Creative Strategy at Aritzia.

STLN LNDS is a media and lifestyle brand and a platform for Indigenous creatives. • Food & Drink Products Winner: Jacques T. Watso, the Abenaki Founder of Sagamité Watso from Odanak, Québec.
• Food & Drink Services Winner: Tina Archuleta, the Jamez Nation Founder of ITALITY PLANT BASED FOODS from Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico (USA).

Each entrepreneur has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their businesses.

“The main reason I am pitching for the second time is because Pow Wow Pitch is a contest like no other,” said Jacques T. Watso, founder of Sagamité Watso. “It is uplifting and inspiring. I just love to be a part of this great experience. Also, my traditional soup mixes are delicious and deserve to be known worldwide!”

Sagamité Watso produces the traditional Abenaki soup of Odanak in a revolutionary soup mix that ties together the ‘feeling of a traditional experience’ with ‘the ease of cooking.’ Founder, Jacques T. Watso, prides himself on his delicious soup mix and the ability to share his cultural food on a larger scale. Jacques shared his business motto during his pitch that his soup is “delicious, nutritious, and Indigenous!” Jacques pitched for a filling machine that will allow him to lower cost and manufacturing time so that he can scale to major grocers across Canada.

Cindy Convery, Founder of PureWild Co. was honoured as the Runner Up for the Food & Drink Products Semi-Final. In addition, the judges also provided an Honourable Mention to Michael John, Founder of Navajo Mike’s.

Food & Drink Services Spotlight:

“Pow Wow Pitch is a great organization and an awesome platform for Indigenous entrepreneurs,” said Tina Archuleta, Founder of ITALITY PLANT BASED FOODS. “I am working to take my business internationally and I decided to pitch to see how I’d compare with other Indigenous businesses across Turtle Ilsand. Plus, I would benefit from capital for my business to bring my products into Puebloan communities across my region.”

ITALITY PLANT BASED FOODS is the first-ever Indigenous and women-owned vegan restaurant and food service in the United States. Founder, Tina Archuleta takes great pride in being able to provide healthy, traditional foods to not only her community, but to all communities that span New Mexico. Tina shared in her pitch that she wishes to service the entire state of New Mexico with the help of a food truck to help her cover the rural areas of the state.

Desiree Streit has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Finals for a chance to win $25,000 to grow her business.

On Friday, Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch, emceed the action-packed program, where four Innovation Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their business ideas and businesses in one minute for their chance to win.

Judges included Renee Racine, Head of Digital Design, Journeys and Design Operations at RBC; Kristina Vilf, Senior Managing Consultant at Mastercard; Anthony Wigham, Entrepreneur & Business Owner of Nuez Acres; and Althea Wishloff, Partner at Raven Indigenous Capital Partners.

“Last year, when I entered Pow Wow Pitch with only an idea, I had a really positive experience and met some great people,” said Desiree Streit, Founder of friday.night.beading.club. “This year I came back with an actual product and business and was happy to see where it would lead me! I knew I wanted to continue to create a relationship with Pow Wow Pitch, and learn as much as I could.”

The BOO-zhee Board, the hero product of friday.night.beading.club, is an innovative storage accessory and system for beading that allows its users to take beading everywhere, with ease. Created by Desiree Streit, the BOO-zhee board is changing the way creators can craft pieces of artwork through portability. Beading is a practice that creators like Desiree hold close to their heart and with this innovative tool, can hold anywhere. 

Desiree shared in her pitch that she intends to expand friday.night.beading.club by providing workshops and expanding her product line. She also shared her commitment to give back, “While I grow this business, it is important to me to give back to the community. I am hosting a free BOO-zhee workshop for Indigenous youth this fall.”

Felisha Crier, Founder of PregZen, was also honoured as the Runner Up of the Innovation Category. Felisha was congratulated for her innovative and inclusive underwear design and for responding to new market opportunities.
