MHA First Nation business based in Bozeman, MT, USA wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 11th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC and Mastercard, announced Shauna White Bear, MHA First Nation Founder of White Bear Moccasins LLC, a business based in Bozeman, MT, USA, as the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Fashion Semi-Final Winner. Shauna has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their business.

More than 130 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) were selected as Semi-Finalists in this year’s Pow Wow Pitch. Each received training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges, competing for the chance to advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. Eleven Fashion Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and a spot in the finals.

Judges included Trisha Hayter, Director of Portfolio Management & Data, RBC Origins, at RBC; Duong Vu, Senior Data Scientist at Mastercard; Corinne Kepper, Vice President of Corporate Giving at Aritzia; and Trisha Pitura, Co-Founder & Co-Owner, at MINI TIPI.

“I’d like to thank my family, my friends, and most importantly the White Bear Moccasins Pack — Mae, Summer, Valor, and Angelina. We did it. We won!” said Shauna White Bear, founder of White Bear Moccasins LLC.

Shauna White Bear, founder of White Bear Moccasins LLC, is a self-taught moccasin maker, leatherworker, and creative force with a passion for craftsmanship, culture, and healing. Based on years of hands-on learning in a traditional cobbler shop, Shauna’s journey began from a place of heartbreak and transformation, leading her to embrace moccasin making as both an art form and a path to personal growth. Her work blends traditional techniques with unique and modern design elements, incorporating materials like wool, brass, and copper to create one-of-a-kind, durable moccasins that reflect her story and her customers’ individuality. Through her brand, Shauna shares her love for leatherwork and storytelling, hoping to inspire younger generations to take pride in their roots and use their creativity to build a life of authenticity and purpose.

In her pitch, Shauna shared plans to use the funding to expand the production and reach of White Bear Moccasins without compromising the handcrafted quality that defines her brand. A portion of the funds will go toward investing in a leather clicker press and custom moccasin pattern dyes to increase efficiency and consistency. She also plans to purchase a portable hand crank sewing machine and a small travel trailer to launch a mobile repair shop, bringing her services directly into Indigenous communities.

To support other makers, Shauna intends to buy bulk tray cloth wool to expand her retail offerings and source materials from fellow Indigenous artisans whenever possible. Her broader mission is to motivate youth to engage their hands and minds, stay rooted in authenticity, and take pride in their culture and creativity. Through White Bear Moccasins, Shauna is not only building a business, she is cultivating a movement of healing, empowerment, and Indigenous excellence.

“The lessons I’ve learned are to never second-guess yourself, to trust your intuition, and to always take a chance on every opportunity that comes your way,” shared Shauna. “If something feels outside of your comfort zone and makes you nervous, that is usually a sign it is worth doing.”

The judges appreciated her clear and compelling presentation and were impressed by the beautiful handmade quality of her work, which resonates deeply with her growing client base. They also commended her remarkable progress and leadership as she continues to expand her business and team.

“Congratulations to Shauna on advancing to the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Her journey and work with White Bear Moccasins embody the spirit of creativity and cultural pride. Shauna’s craftsmanship and vision not only uplift her community, but also inspire the next generation of Indigenous peoples to stay rooted in their culture and authenticity as they follow their own paths.”

Alongside selecting a winner, the judges also acknowledged the Runner Up for the Fashion industry category. Shayna Boudreau, Founder of Amakehs Designs, was praised by the judges for her passion, energy, and ambition to grow a business that uplifts her community while showcasing her unique products. They were impressed by her strong start and creative offerings and encouraged her to continue highlighting what makes her brand special as she scales.

“Pow Wow Pitch is an incredible showcase of Indigenous changemakers who are making a meaningful impact through their passion, creativity, and determination,” said Chinyere Eni, Head of RBC Origins. “We are so inspired by all the participants and semi-finalists – their ingenuity and perseverance to bring their innovative ideas to life is truly commendable. At RBC, we are committed to supporting their entrepreneurial journey and celebrating their successes.”

“The talent and determination showcased by this year’s Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs have been nothing short of inspiring,” said Jennifer M. Sloan, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & Policy and Stakeholder Engagement at Mastercard, Canada. “Our team at Mastercard works closely with partners like Pow Wow Pitch to break down barriers and create new opportunities for growth and economic prosperity across Canada.
Cora Kavyaktok: Weaves Inuit identity into fashion wear with Inuk Gold

Cora Kavyaktok, a proud Inuk entrepreneur originally from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, is redefining what business wear can look like through her brand, Inuk Gold. Now based in Vermilion, Alberta, Cora is the founder and creative force behind this emerging clothing line that offers professional business attire featuring subtle Inuit designs created by Inuit artists. More than fashion, Inuk Gold is a platform for cultural celebration and community reinvestment. The brand purchases artwork upfront, shares each artist’s story, and gives five percent of net profits directly to the artist, with another five percent donated to a nonprofit of their choice in their home community. Inuk Gold blends elegance with purpose, making space for Inuit identity in boardrooms across the country.

The inspiration for Inuk Gold came from Cora’s own experience navigating the corporate world. She often found herself wishing for clothing that reflected her heritage while still aligning with professional expectations. That absence sparked an idea. “There was nothing I could wear to work that represented my Inuit identity,” Cora shares. What started as a personal gap quickly evolved into a business rooted in pride, purpose, and cultural authenticity. Inuk Gold is not just clothing, it is a movement designed to empower artists, elevate Indigenous presence in professional spaces, and spark important conversations about representation.

Although still in its early stages, Inuk Gold has a clear and compelling mission: bring Inuit artistry into business wear and use fashion as a vehicle for change. The designs feature artwork by Inuit creators, with a strong emphasis on storytelling and giving back. “Our hope is that by showcasing these artists, we help amplify their work far beyond our clothing,” says Cora. Each piece is intentionally crafted to reflect Inuit values while providing customers with a tangible connection to the communities and creators behind the designs. For Cora, it is about honouring culture and creating opportunities with every stitch.

Cora’s journey to launching Inuk Gold officially began when she attended a Pow Wow Pitch information session. She had been dreaming about the brand for over a year but had not yet taken the leap into business. Learning that she did not need an established venture to participate gave her the confidence to start. “I am so thankful for this opportunity,” she reflects. “It pushed me to stop dreaming and start doing.” Since then, Inuk Gold has moved from concept to reality driven by community values and a vision for change.

As a Pow Wow Pitch Semi-Finalist, Cora was paired with Jasmine Chan from Aritzia as a mentor. That experience, she says, was one of the most valuable parts of the process. “Having access to someone with industry knowledge was incredible. Jasmine met with me twice, took time to understand my goals, and offered compassionate, thoughtful guidance.” Beyond the practical advice, Cora says the mentorship left her feeling supported and inspired. “Jasmine really cared about helping Indigenous communities. I felt heard and respected throughout the process, and I recommend every semi-finalist take full advantage of the mentorship opportunity.”

For aspiring Indigenous entrepreneurs, Cora offers heartfelt advice: “Starting a business can feel scary, and it is. But just do the work.” She encourages others to believe in their ideas, trust their instincts, and remember the deeper meaning behind their efforts. “You are more capable than you realize. Your idea matters, and so do you. When you invest in yourself and your community, we all win.” She adds, “Take the leap. Let your heart guide you. You are carrying forward the strength of generations before you. Be your ancestors’ wildest dreams, and know that every step you take opens doors for those who will follow.”

The Matsheshu Magic: A Journey of Indigenous Artistry and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Raphaëlle Langevin is the Pekuakamiulnuatsh owner of Matsheshu Creations, a business operating in Mashteuiatsh, Québec, that marries tradition with innovation, Raphaëlle’s entrepreneurial journey is marked by a passion for design and a deep sense of community.

“I was brainstorming about entrepreneurial projects when I first found out the name ‘matsheshu’. Matsheshu means fox in Nehlueun,” Raphaëlle shared. This name, resonant with personal meaning, became the cornerstone of a venture.

Matsheshu Creations is is dedicated to Indigenous craftsmanship. “I design my own prints for fabrics taking inspiration from cultural symbols, traditional patterns, and natural elements,” Langevin says. The brand offers a comprehensive line: from jewelry to apparel, colouring books, and greeting cards. “What makes my business stand out is my business model. We have a wide variety of products for all tastes and budgets,” she explains. At its heart, Matsheshu is a family and community business, a collaboration between independent crafters, seasonal employees, and Raphaëlle’s own family.

In a significant stride forward, Raphaëlle has plans to launch Matsheshu‘s first storefront in Mashteuiatsh. “This will be the turning point of our business, as it will allow us to have our first store and to push our online sales further,” she expressed, revealing a vision to expand across Canada through online sales, new retail locations, and appearances at powwows.

“The most challenging part has been to find balance,” Raphaëlle admits. Her recollection of burning out in 2022, followed by the joy of discovering she was expecting her second child, is poignant. Yet, her children are her anchors, keeping her grounded and motivated. “They are the most precious thing and my biggest source of motivation,” she says with palpable affection.

Two years after her first pitch at Pow Wow Pitch, Raphaëlle is back, representing a business that’s matured and ready for greater success. She emphasizes the value of Pow Wow Pitch not just in terms of potential financial rewards but also for the opportunities it presents for networking and learning. Her experience with mentors Stephanie Ying from Mastercard and Crystal Hunt from Shopify has been transformative. “Crystal made me recognize strengths I did not realize I had, which really brought my pitch to the next level,” she gratefully shares.

Through Matsheshu Creations, she seeks to bolster community pride. “I am so proud to make a bridge between talented crafters and caring customers,” she says. Her mantra? Building her business as she builds her family.

For budding entrepreneurs, Raphaëlle’s advice is straightforward yet profound. “Surround yourself. There are so many people out there who can help you and inspire you. Connect with them. Keep an open mind. Believe in yourself and work hard.”

In wrapping up, Raphaëlle’s gratitude towards the Pow Wow Pitch community is evident. “Thank you for creating this amazing community,” she concludes, a gentle reminder of the strength and power in unity and shared dreams.

Register to watch Raphaël pitch at the Fashion Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 15, 2023, at 7 PM ET and vote for Matsheshu Creations to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#55) before September 17, 2023.

Skoden Hair Ties: From A Simple Idea to A Cultural Sensation

Shayna Boudreau’s journey into entrepreneurship started on a rather festive note. Yearning for a Christmas hair tie, she embarked on crafting one. Encouraged by her husband, the Kingsclear First Nation entrepreneur took a leap, showcased her creation on Facebook, and almost immediately witnessed them flying off the virtual shelves. That was the beginning of Skoden Hair Ties.

“I posted on TikTok and sold out my very first launch online on January 15th, 2022,” Shayna recalls. With her venture blossoming, Shayna sought to do more than just sell hair ties. She envisioned her brand as an emblem of inspiration for Indigenous youth. “My motivation was to inspire other Indigenous youth to believe in themselves.”

Shayna’s vision it to grow Skoden Hair Ties into a cultural emblem with a humorous nod –an ‘inside joke’ in fabric form. “What sets my business apart is the name – ‘Skoden’,” Shayna explains with pride. “It’s like saying, ‘Grab your Hair Tie and Skoden!’ which for those who don’t know, means ‘let’s go then’.”

From battling self-doubt to confronting her fear of public speaking, Shayna’s journey with Skoden Hair Ties has propelled personal and professional growth. However, her resilience has shone through each hurdle. “As an entrepreneur, it’s natural to face self-doubt and question your own worthiness. But it’s important to remember that these feelings are common and do not reflect your true abilities,” she reflects.

Participating in the Pow Wow Pitch not only augmented her confidence but also provided her with invaluable insights. She candidly shares the encouragement she received from her Mentors, “Laura Englehart from JEDI advised, ‘Speak from the heart– you know your business the best;’ Jayden Halls from RBC told me not to be afraid to really go for it; and, Stephanie Ying from Mastercard encouraged me to pause and ‘take a deep breath’.”

Envisioning the road ahead, Shayna contemplates expanding her venture. “The biggest help for my business would be to find a partner or employee who loves to sew, come up with new marketing ideas, and attend events,” she outlines. To aspiring entrepreneurs, her message is crystal clear: “Not everyone will be your supporter– and that’s okay!”

As she concludes, Shayna leaves us with a poignant reflection on her journey so far, “To keep pushing through the challenges, stay focused, and never lose sight of your dreams! As I was once afraid to give my dream a shot, yet here I am, a Semi-Finalist in PowWow Pitch.”

Register to watch Shayna pitch at the Fashion Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 15, 2023, at 7 PM ET and vote for Skoden Hair Ties to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#92) before September 17, 2023.
