Leanne Jones: Carrying Indigenous Stories Forward with Leanne Digital Design

Leanne Jones, Owner of Leanne Digital Design, and a proud member of Peguis First Nation, is making waves in the branding and web design world by combining artistry with authentic storytelling. Based in Winnipeg, her studio specializes in creating strategic, visually impactful websites and graphic designs that help businesses truly connect with their audiences. With over a decade of experience, Leanne’s approach goes beyond aesthetics. She builds brands that honour values and inspire trust, especially within Indigenous communities.

Leanne’s journey into entrepreneurship was driven by a desire to support other Indigenous business owners in growing their ventures while holding true to their cultural roots. “I started my business to help entrepreneurs grow while honouring their values,” she explains. Her services range from custom WordPress and Shopify sites to SEO, logo design, and digital marketing assets. All of these are crafted with intention and purpose.

Looking to the future, Leanne has clear goals to expand her impact. She aims to scale her business by hiring more Indigenous talent and creating designs that not only drive growth but also strengthen communities. For her, success is not just about numbers; it is about fostering a creative space where Indigenous voices are amplified and celebrated through design.

Leanne also reflects fondly on her experience refining her pitch for Pow Wow Pitch, crediting her mentor Philip Crout from CIRA for invaluable guidance. “He met with me twice to go over my pitch. The first time he gave me advice on how to refine it, and the second time we reviewed it again. It was super helpful. He understood my industry, so we could relate.” That support, she says, made all the difference in building confidence and clarity in sharing her vision.

When asked what advice she has for aspiring Indigenous entrepreneurs, Leanne encourages boldness and perseverance. “Just go for it! Make it exist first and make it perfect later. Our stories and perspectives are unique, and we offer something the world needs. We shouldn’t live small.” Her words remind us that authentic voices have the power to reshape industries and inspire future generations.

At the heart of Leanne’s work lies a deep connection to Indigenous storytelling traditions. “Design is my way of carrying forward the storytelling I grew up with. As Indigenous people, storytelling is how we connect, teach, and inspire,” she shares. “I see every logo, website, and brand as a modern way to share those stories and help others express who they are. My work is not just about making things look good. It’s about creating something meaningful that will carry our voices forward for years to come.”

Leanne Digital Design continues to be a beacon of creativity and cultural pride in the Indigenous business landscape, proving that design is far more than visuals. It is a powerful tool for connection, growth, and legacy.

Watch Leanne as she pitches her business in the Professional Services & Trades category airing on September 8, 2025 at 6:00 PM ET at powwowpitch.org/episodes.

Championing the Cause: Tim O’Loan’s Journey to Illuminate Reconciliation

In an era where advocating for the rights and awareness of Indigenous people is mounting, few have embodied the spirit of this movement more profoundly than Tim O’Loan, the Founder and CEO of ReconciliActionS – Reconciliation Speakers Bureau who is Sahtu Dene living in Ottawa, Ontario.

Having had the opportunity to serve as the Advisor to the Truth and Reconcilliation Committee (TRC) Chair, the Hon Murray Sinclair, Tim’s life took a turn which ultimately culminated in him championing the cause of reconciliation on a national level. “During that time and after the TRC closed down, I started speaking on reconciliation,” Tim recalls, reminiscing about the genesis of his entrepreneurial journey. “It was then I realized there was not a dedicated national level speakers bureau solely dedicated to reconciliation.” Thus, the Reconciliation Speakers Bureau was conceived.

The Bureau, which already boasts over 100 speakers delving into various topics about reconciliation, aims to provide insight based on unique lived experiences. Tim’s vision for it is clear, “We hope to be the first speaker’s bureau that people think of when requiring speakers to broaden their understanding of what reconciliation may look like.”

Behind his drive lies a personal connection. “I have been forever changed by witnessing the often inhumane and horrific experiences of the survivors of residential schools,” he shares. “When I disclosed my severe PTSD diagnosis to one of the TRC Commissioners, the Hon. Wilton (Willie) Littlechild, he looked at me and said, ‘We all wear their stories my son.’ I felt obligated to continue talking and lecturing on reconciliation.”

Notwithstanding his passion, the entrepreneurial road has been far from easy. Tim openly discusses his challenges, particularly his struggle with PTSD, crediting his Executive Director for managing the challenging facets of the business.

Choosing to partake in the Pow Wow Pitch, Tim sees it as a platform that champions Indigenous-owned businesses like his. The experience has been enriching, with Tim noting, “The best part of Pow Wow Pitch so far is seeing all the amazing Indigenous entrepreneurs across Turtle Island!”

When it comes to inspiration, Tim fondly reminisces about his experiences with the Hon. Murray Sinclair and his grandfather, George Blondin. “Being part of his journey with the TRC, I witnessed the different ways and degrees of advocating for survivors.” His grandfather, who despite immense personal loss, continued to live with dignity, serves as another beacon of inspiration for Tim.

Offering advice to budding Indigenous entrepreneurs, Tim underscores the importance of ensuring dreams align with business realities. “There are loads of supports out there, so I would suggest researching and using all of the resources available,” he advises.

In Tim O’Loan’s journey from being a child of a survivor to the helm of a national speakers bureau showcases the power of determination and the importance of staying true to one’s roots.
Register to watch Tim pitch at the Professional Services Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 11, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Tim to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#78) before September 17, 2023.

Digital Empowerment: Sharon Marshall’s Vision for Indigenous Women’s Independence

Nestled in Lantzville, British Columbia, Cree and Métis innovator Sharon Marshall, is shining a light on the endless possibilities digital literacy can unlock for Indigenous women with DEVA Training & Staffing Solutions, aka Digital DEVA.

Driven by startling statistics concerning unemployment among Indigenous women and her personal experiences, Sharon embarked on a mission: “Having fled domestic violence when my kids were little, and being able to keep my job because I worked remotely, I know the importance of financial independence and work-from-home employment for Indigenous women,” she shared.

Digital DEVA isn’t just another online training platform. It’s an initiative that promises mentorship and guaranteed job placements for its graduates. Sharon elaborated, “Mentorship is the cornerstone of this program. The DEVAs (Digital Executive Virtual Assistants) receive mentorship during the 20-week online program and through their practicums and job placement contracts.” The unique value proposition is evident, “I am the only online program in Canada that guarantees job placement upon practicum graduation.”

Currently, the venture is in its nascent stages, with a proof of concept established through 40 women who have completed the program and three DEVAs taking VA contracts. However, Sharon’s vision is grand. She sees this program expanding not just across Canada but internationally to countries like Mexico and Australia.

The profound impact of DEVA Training extends beyond just employment. “They gain self-confidence, self-worth, self-reliance, and self-determination. These soft skills ripple out to their families, and communities and showcase them as positive role models, which helps to heal the cycle of intergenerational trauma,” Sharon highlighted.

Sharon’s entrepreneurial journey is filled with pride and challenges alike. She beams with pride, mentioning, “I am most proud of the impact this program that I created has and can have on the women I support.” However, like all entrepreneurs, she acknowledges the hurdles, stating the most challenging aspect is “getting the word out and finding the funding to enable Indigenous women to take the program.”

Her decision to join Pow Wow Pitch was fueled by a desire to make a difference. She expressed, “I thought I had a chance at the grand prize, and $25,000 would enable me to sponsor five women to take the program.” The competition also accentuated the value of mentorship, a pillar in Sharon’s initiative. Her mentors, Robert Perron from RBC and Jim Flett from NACCA provided valuable insights into pitching and maintaining a positive demeanor.

Reflecting on Indigenous entrepreneurial ethos, Sharon emphasizes that profit isn’t the primary objective. “My program is infused with the Seven Sacred Teachings, and we only work with individuals and organizations who are on the path of truth and reconciliation,” she added.

The biggest lesson for Sharon? Resilience. “Life as an entrepreneur is very rewarding; however, it can be a roller coaster ride at times. I have learned how best to ride the waves,” she shared.

For Indigenous individuals aspiring to embark on their entrepreneurial journey, Sharon’s advice is simple yet profound: “Believe in yourself and your idea. Especially if it keeps you up at night, keep at it. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different. Surround yourself with positive people who have your back.”

Ending her narrative on a powerful note, Sharon emphasizes, “Indigenous women are the backbone of Indigenous communities. When Indigenous women thrive, we all thrive.”

In an era marked by digital transformation, Sharon Marshall is not just training Indigenous women to be digitally savvy; she is empowering them to rewrite their destinies.
Register to watch Sharon pitch at the Professional Services Online Watch Party on September 11, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Sharon to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#23) before September 17, 2023.

Clinton Elliott: From Trials to Triumph in First Nation Entrepreneurship

Clinton Elliott is an entrepreneur and an emblem of hope, resilience, and change. The Okanese carpenter from Balcarres, Saskatchewan, and the proud owner of Patience Plus Contracting, is forging a journey of determination, community support, and an unwavering spirit.

Clinton’s initial foray into entrepreneurship began from a spark of discontent. He reminisces, “I had seen what was in the housing units of my First Nation of Okanese and knew I could build a better long-lasting product.” Thus, in 2010, Clinton launched a custom cabinet shop to provide quality cabinets below the standard cost for his community. Today, his vision has expanded far beyond. “Now, with my partner, we’ve grown into not only providing cabinets but steel roofs, decks and ramps, and interior and exterior renovations.”

The heart of Clinton’s business lies in its impact. More than just profit, it’s about “giving back to my community.” The joy on his customers’ faces when they see the finished product is his biggest reward. However, growth has come with its challenges. “The most challenging part is keeping up with our workload. We’ve had to turn customers away because we don’t have the manpower,” Clinton admits.

Clinton credits his late Father, Ron Elliott, as a pivotal force. “My father was my biggest supporter,” he fondly remembers. The legacy of mentorship continued with William Besler, who introduced him to the nuances of custom cabinet building and finishing carpentry, leaving him with a timeless piece of advice: “The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.”

It’s not just business acumen that steers Clinton’s entrepreneurial ship. The grounding force? “Indigenous approaches,” he states. “Giving thanks to the Creator each day helped me change my life, direct me into helping not only my community but many.” This spiritual rootedness resonates deeply with his Indigenous heritage, infusing his business with a sense of purpose and community upliftment.

His experiences – from battling 15 years of addiction, achieving 17 years of sobriety, acquiring his grade 12 and red seal certification in carpentry, to establishing himself as a successful First Nation Entrepreneur for 13 years – have shaped his advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. “Do it, take that leap. You’re only stopping yourself from succeeding if you don’t,” he encourages.

Applying for the Pow Wow Pitch was a testament to his willingness to embrace opportunities and face challenges head-on. “I thought I might as well give it a shot. I’m used to having to do things the hard way. Winning would support our expansion.”

Above all, Clinton’s story is a beacon for many. Overcoming adversities, holding onto hope, and transforming it into a vision. “Coming from a broken home, struggling through years where it seemed like there was no hope to now being a successful First Nation Entrepreneur, I’ve got a lot to be proud of,” he concludes, grateful for the unwavering support of his fiancé and the benevolent gaze of his father from above.

Register to watch Clinton pitch at the Professional Services & Trades Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 11, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Clinton to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#69) before September 17, 2023.

Dreams Etched in Concrete: The Journey of Ricky Dankewich and Blackstone Concrete

Passion, resilience, and an unwavering vision to make an impact – are the pillars that characterize the entrepreneurial journey of Ricky Dankewich, the Founder and CEO of Blackstone Concrete, who belongs to Cat Lake First Nations and lives in Dryden, Ontario. As a Semi-Finalist in the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch competition, Ricky’s vision isn’t just about business success; it’s about lighting a beacon for others.

Driven by an innate desire to “inspire others to take that next step in life,” Ricky’s motivation for starting Blackstone Concrete was rooted in the power of dreams and the will to chase them. “If I can do this,” he shares, “anyone that has a dream owes it to themselves to take that leap of faith and do what you love in life to make their family and community proud.”

Specializing in decorative concrete, Blackstone Concrete provides various services, from resurfacing deteriorating concrete surfaces to creating designs that mimic natural textures like wood grain and stone. The versatility of their offerings spans from residential uses to large-scale applications in shopping malls, educational institutions, hotels, and more. With an edge in delivering products that can withstand deicing salt, extreme climates, and UV rays, their strength lies in “virtually unlimited designs, patterns, textures, and colour options.”

Ricky’s vision for Blackstone Concrete transcends mere profit. His ambition is rooted in his desire to give back. “I am building my business with a vision of providing employment opportunities to our at-risk Indigenous youth,” he states.

The journey, however fulfilling, hasn’t been without challenges. Ricky admits the hurdles faced during the inception: “Finding capital to start the business.” Traditional banking routes were almost inaccessible due to credit score constraints. But Ricky’s spirit remained indomitable. “I did not give up,” he asserts, emphasizing that the path, though challenging, is worth every hurdle.

Yet, it was a blend of destiny and preparedness that led him to Pow Wow Pitch. “Someone…sent me the link to pitch,” he recalls. The platform offered more than just an opportunity to present a business idea; it affirmed Ricky’s determination. For Ricky, the guidance of Pow Wow Pitch Mentors Colin Gervais from Mitacs and Edward Duschl from RBC was pivotal.

Ricky’s advice to budding Indigenous entrepreneurs mirrors his journey: “Don’t let fear hold you back! Don’t let that stop you from achieving everything you want.”

In gratitude, he shares, “I would like to thank Pow Wow Pitch for starting this organization. Without them, many of us wouldn’t get the attention [or the] opportunity to achieve our dreams.”

With Blackstone Concrete, he hasn’t just laid a foundation for a thriving business and cemented his legacy as an inspiration for many.

Register to watch Ricky pitch at the Professional Services Semi-Final Online Watch Party on September 11, 2023, at 6 PM ET and vote for Ricky to win the 2023 People’s Choice Prize (#12) before September 17, 2023.
