Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg business based in Ottawa, ON wins $1,000 and advances to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale

On September 9th, Pow Wow Pitch, an Indigenous-led non-profit organization that hosts a Turtle Island wide Indigenous Business Pitch Competition for Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC and Mastercard, announced Tessa Belanger, the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation Founder of Pass the Sage, a business based in Ottawa, ON, as the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Creative Semi-Final Winner. Tessa has won $1,000 and is advancing to the Grand Finale for a chance to win $25,000 to grow their business.

More than 130 Indigenous entrepreneurs from across Turtle Island (Canada and the United States) were selected as Semi-Finalists in this year’s Pow Wow Pitch. Each received training and mentorship to prepare for their semi-final pitch to the Judges, competing for the chance to advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale. Twelve Creative Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and a spot in the finals.

Judges included Cameron Skura, Senior Relationship Manager at RBC; Helena Wade, Manager of Communications at Mastercard; Meagan Thompson, Director of Corporate Proposals at Altis Recruitment; Pegah Bazogh, Director of Operations at Aritzia; and Preeti Hiro, Regional Coordinator at EDC.

“When I found out, I felt overwhelmed with gratitude, excitement, and a deep sense of purpose,” said Tessa Belanger, founder of Pass the Sage. “It felt like more than a moment. I want to thank my home community of Kitigan Zibi, the Creator for guiding me, and my son Macaya, who inspires me every single day to keep pushing forward and breaking generational curses. I am also incredibly thankful to the Pow Wow Pitch team for creating a platform where our projects, stories, and dreams can come to life and be seen for the medicine they truly are.”

Tessa Belanger, founder of Pass the Sage, is an Anishinaabeg writer, educator, and community healer from Kitigan Zibi Anishinaabeg, dedicated to creating safe, supportive spaces for Indigenous storytelling, reflection, and healing. Rooted in her mission to help others feel seen, heard, and connected, Tessa blends traditional knowledge with creative expression to support community wellness. Her work includes the Pass the Sage Guided Journal, a culturally grounded resource featuring reflection prompts, teachings, and writing exercises, as well as creative writing workshops that center storytelling as a form of medicine. Through these offerings, Tessa helps Indigenous youth and community members explore identity, build resilience, and reclaim their stories.

In her pitch, Tessa shared plans to reinvest in Pass the Sage by expanding the guided journal into a multi-book series, growing her anthology collections, and offering more creative writing workshops to reach remote and underserved communities. She emphasized her commitment to community impact, with 25 percent of all revenue going back into Indigenous charities across Canada. Additional funding would support the distribution of journals to schools, libraries, and homes, provide honorariums to Indigenous collaborators and knowledge keepers, and build capacity for grassroots healing programs. Through this work, Tessa aims to deepen the reach of Pass the Sage while fostering cultural revitalization, intergenerational connection, and a collective path toward healing.

“One lesson I’ve carried is that our stories are our strength and a dream is never too big or too far fetched” says Tessa. “For other Indigenous entrepreneurs, I would say, trust your vision, lean into community, and don’t be afraid to take up space even when met with doubt. Every step forward, even the small ones, matters.”

The judges appreciated Tessa’s polished and well-prepared presentation, which clearly communicated her product, its meaningful impact, and her strong commitment to supporting Indigenous organizations and education. They were impressed by how clearly she presented the use of proceeds and admired her collaborative approach, including her partnerships with Indigenous communities.

“Congratulations to Tessa on advancing to the 2025 Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Through Pass the Sage, Tessa is using storytelling as a way to support healing by creating spaces for reflection and connection. Her vision and commitment to community is what we love to celebrate at Pow Wow Pitch, entrepreneurship that is deeply rooted in love for community.”

Alongside selecting a winner, the judges also acknowledged the Runner Up for the Creative industry category. Brittany Bonaparte, Founder of Water Drum Boy, the judges appreciated the creativity and cultural significance of revitalizing the Kanien’kehá (Mohawk language) through digital design, as well as the engaging presentation showcasing drawings, products, and the inspiration behind Water Drum Boy.

“Pow Wow Pitch is an incredible showcase of Indigenous changemakers who are making a meaningful impact through their passion, creativity, and determination,” said Chinyere Eni, Head of RBC Origins. “We are so inspired by all the participants and semi-finalists – their ingenuity and perseverance to bring their innovative ideas to life is truly commendable. At RBC, we are committed to supporting their entrepreneurial journey and celebrating their successes.”

“The talent and determination showcased by this year’s Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs have been nothing short of inspiring,” said Jennifer M. Sloan, Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & Policy and Stakeholder Engagement at Mastercard, Canada. “Our team at Mastercard works closely with partners like Pow Wow Pitch to break down barriers and create new opportunities for growth and economic prosperity across Canada.
Last night, five Innovation Semi-Finalists had the opportunity to pitch their organizations and community initiatives in one-minute for their chance to win an industry prize and advance as a finalist.

Jason pitched to win funds to conduct further research and upgrade Nipiy’s technology that will increase accessibility and user friendliness.

“A few lessons I’ve learned are to be patient, surround yourself with mentors, and find a good support system,” reflected Jason. “Keep growing your network as much as possible and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

The judges congratulate Jason for his unique and innovative approach to solving a problem. The judges applaud Jason’s work ethic to make his idea into a reality and congratulate him on patenting his product.

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s leading initiative and non-profit organization dedicated to supporting emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced it will continue its partnership with Export Development Canada (EDC) in 2023. EDC, continuing its commitment to foster Indigenous entrepreneurship, will join Pow Wow Pitch as a Silver Partner for the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Program.

Ready to support more than 2,500 Indigenous entrepreneurs in 2023, EDC is committed to providing mentorship, funding, training, marketing, and a nurturing community. EDC’s investment ensures that Pow Wow Pitch can amplify its virtual programs, expand in-person support in communities across Canada, and grow its offerings to support Indigenous entrepreneurs to pursue global markets.

EDC’s support of Pow Wow Pitch as a Silver-Level Sponsor, and the engagement of EDC employees as mentors, trusted advisors, and judges for virtual pitch contests, enriches Pow Wow Pitch’s offering. In addition to supporting Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs, EDC has also renewed its commitment as a co-presenting sponsor of the 3rd Annual Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with EDC to support early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs to understand the opportunities of global markets for their businesses,” said Sunshine Tenasco, Founder of Pow Wow Pitch. “By providing training, encouragement and support to Indigenous businesses, we are reclaiming trade our own way across Turtle Island and beyond.”

Reflecting on the historical importance of trade in Indigenous prosperity, Todd Evans, National Lead for Indigenous Exporters at EDC, voiced his optimism: “Exporting can empower today’s Indigenous entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses.
Pow Wow Pitch recently welcomed Evans to present at the Pow Wow Pitch Bootcamp, a virtual half-day seminar for Indigenous entrepreneurs that entered the 2023 Pow Wow Pitch Competition. This opportunity allowed entrepreneurs to ask questions about exporting and how they could utilize EDC’s services to expand their business and growth.

As part of the partnership, EDC is proud to share the stories of Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs. Most recently, EDC spotlighted Pow Wow Pitch Alumni Joella Hogan, the Founder of The Yukon Soaps Company, an all-natural product company specializing in making soaps, shampoos and essential oils using juniper berries, spruce tips and wildflowers from the land near her home in Mayo, Yukon. Click here to read the full story.

Indigenous entrepreneurs are invited to pitch to win more than $200,000 in cash prizes

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition for emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, presented in partnership with RBC, Shopify, Meta and Mastercard, announced the opening of its eighth annual Pow Wow Pitch competition to Inuit, Métis and First Nations entrepreneurs across Turtle Island.

Through Pow Wow Pitch, Indigenous vendors, artists and entrepreneurs from Canada and the United States can pitch their businesses and business ideas virtually and live at pow wows and Indigenous festivals for their chance to join the Pow Wow Pitch Accelerator program and win more than $200,000 in cash prizes.

“Pow Wow is a place to meet, dance, sing, honour our culture and trade,” said Pow Wow Pitch Founder, Sunshine Tenasco. “Indigenous people have the ideas to make a difference in their communities, and Pow Wow Pitch is our platform to support one another as a community.”

How it works

Virtual: Between April 6th and June 21st, Indigenous entrepreneurs can submit a 1-minute video business pitch at www.powwowpitch.org/pitch as their entry into the Pow Wow Pitch Competition, or they can sign up and pitch live on Instagram through InstaPitch. Pow Wow Pitch will shortlist the top 80 Indigenous entrepreneurs as semi-finalists to receive mentorship, pitch training and compete in the virtual semi-final broadcasts for their chance to win $60,000 cash prizes and advance to the Grand Finale in October.

In-Person: Pow Wow Pitch will also be on-site for Indigenous entrepreneurs to pitch live at the Manito Ahbee Festival in Winnipeg on May 21st, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival in Ottawa on June 25th, and other major Indigenous powwows and festivals across Canada and the United States. Entrepreneurs can pitch their business or idea for one minute to win cash prizes and advance to the Pow Wow Pitch Grand Finale.

The Finals: On October 19th, the top entrepreneurs from the virtual and live semi-finals will pitch to a panel of judges at the Grand Finale for the chance to win the top prizes: Alumni Prize ($5,000), People’s Choice Prize ($5,000), 3rd Prize ($5,000), 2nd Prize ($10,000), and 1st Prize ($25,000).

All entrepreneurs who enter the pitch competition will join the Pow Wow Pitch community, get access to a free Indigenous Startup Program, access more than $1,000 worth of free technology, tools and support, and have the chance to have their products and services featured in the Pow Wow Pitch annual Mailer Box to 2,500 customers and on the Pow Wow Pitch Marketplace launching later this year for socially-conscious customers looking to ‘Buy Indigenous.’

Last year’s Winner, Smudge the Blades, used the competition to grow awareness and forge new collaborations.

“Winning Pow Wow Pitch helped me get traction with major sports stores and distribution partners across Canada, gain coverage in news articles and Sportsnet, led to awesome collaborations with NHL Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, with new plans to work with the Shopify Build Native Team to revamp our website,” said Harlan Kingfisher, Founder of Smudge the Blades. “Through Pow Wow Pitch, I found friends and feel famous-even. People are recognizing the brand and me, which is helping us grow! It was an incredible experience and an amazing community.”

Powered by Partnerships

To scale the Indigenous-led pitch competition across Turtle Island, Pow Wow Pitch is working with industry leaders who believe in the power of Indigenous entrepreneurship. RBC, Shopify, Meta and Mastercard have signed on with significant multi-year support as Co-Presenting Sponsors of the initiative to allow Pow Wow Pitch to rise to its ambition to support every Indigenous entrepreneur.

“Shopify aims to bring more voices to entrepreneurship, and Pow Wow Pitch allows Indigenous entrepreneurs from all stages and intersections to share their dreams, beliefs, culture, and expressions of economic self-determination,” says Kyle St-Amour-Brennan, Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program Manager at Shopify. “Pow Wow Pitch has built one of the greatest Indigenous entrepreneurial showcases anywhere, and we’re privileged and excited to continue our ongoing partnership and shared mission to empower more Native entrepreneurs from communities everywhere.”

“Indigenous entrepreneurs drive innovation and change in their communities and across Canada,” said Garrick Tiplady, VP and Country Director at Meta in Canada, “We are proud to continue supporting Pow Wow Pitch and their incredible community of entrepreneurs through educational resources and funding.”

“At Mastercard, we are committed to fostering an inclusive economy that benefits everyone, including the Indigenous community,” said Sasha Krstic, president of Mastercard in Canada. “We recognize that Indigenous entrepreneurs face disproportionate barriers and, in partnership with Pow Wow Pitch, we are proud to address some of their unique barriers and challenges to help amplify the success of Indigenous entrepreneurs across the country.”

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, a grassroots initiative by and for Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced the opening of applications and nominations for the 2022 Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards to celebrate excellence and outstanding achievement of Indigenous entrepreneurship.

It’s an honour for RBC to support this year’s awards as we do our part to celebrate Indigenous innovations and share their inspiring entrepreneurial stories with Canadians at large.”

Today, Pow Wow Pitch, North America’s premier pitch competition and non-profit organization supporting emerging Indigenous entrepreneurs, announced Export Development Canada (EDC) as a Silver Partner for its 2022 Pow Wow Pitch Program.

Pow Wow Pitch is set to support more than 2,500 Indigenous entrepreneurs in 2022 with mentorship, funding, training, marketing and a safe and trusted community of support. EDC’s investment is helping Pow Wow Pitch to scale its virtual programs, re-enter communities with on-the-ground support across Canada, and scale its programming to support Indigenous entrepreneurs in the United States and New Zealand.

“We are proud to partner for a second year with EDC as we scale Pow Wow Pitch internationally while growing the global ambitions of early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs here in Canada,” said Sunshine Tenasco, the Founder of Pow Wow Pitch. “Our shared activities and research will help Indigenous entrepreneurs deepen their community roots while growing their impact globally through the development of the Indigenous economy and Indigenous-to-Indigenous global trade.”

In addition to supporting Pow Wow Pitch as a Silver-Level Sponsor and engaging EDC employees as mentors, trusted advisors, and judges for virtual pitch contests and on the ground at pow wows across Canada, EDC and Pow Wow Pitch will collaborate on research and outreach related to export awareness and activities of early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs.

“Trade was central to Indigenous prosperity prior to European settlement, and we believe that exporting can be an effective way for Indigenous entrepreneurs today to build sustainable businesses,” says Todd Evans, National Lead for Indigenous Exporters at EDC. “Our partnership with Pow Wow Pitch helps EDC make trade more inclusive by expanding access to our trade knowledge, financing solutions, equity, insurance, and connections.”

As a judge in the 2021 Pow Wow Pitch Prairie Region Semifinals, Evans was personally inspired by the pitches he heard. “Our work building sustainable, profitable export opportunities for Indigenous companies carries a community aspect that is incredibly important to me,” says Evans. “Working with Pow Wow Pitch connects EDC with a growing network of First Nations, Inuit and Metis entrepreneurs who are creating self-reliance, self-sufficiency and financial sovereignty for their communities by launching innovative businesses. I’m excited to renew our partnership, meet this year’s participants, and support Pow Wow Pitch’s own push to go global.”
