A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From the Kiowa Nation, The Son of Picasso, Founder of Products Of My Environment and 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient, is a visionary in the world of sustainable streetwear. He launched Products Of My Environment five years ago with a mission to create clothing that not only redefines fashion but also serves as a canvas for self-expression and liberation. “It’s fun. People are like living gallery walls, and my clothing is the painting,” he explains, emphasizing how deeply personal and artistic his designs are. For him, every individual wearing his pieces becomes part of a larger dynamic artwork that celebrates identity, culture, and freedom.

At the heart of Products Of My Environment is a desire to move beyond conventional limits. The brand challenges these conventions by creating fashion that transcends societal labels. “I hope to create a clothing brand that transcends the concept of race, size, or gender,” he shares, aiming to foster an inclusive space where everyone can feel empowered to wear whatever they want, regardless of societal expectations.

Looking ahead, The Son of Picasso has ambitious plans for Products Of My Environment. In the next five years, he aims to establish a full-scale factory for manufacturing luxury streetwear on Indigenous land. This venture would not only allow him to source materials in a way that aligns with his sustainable ethos but also empower Indigenous communities through employment and economic opportunities.

Receiving an Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant will provide The Son of Picasso with the essential financial support needed to purchase sustainable supplies, allowing him to further develop Products Of My Environment.

For The Son of Picasso, the essence of Products Of My Environment is about staying true to oneself and embracing the authenticity that comes from within. His advice to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: “Be real with yourself.” This message reflects his own journey—one rooted in a deep connection to his heritage, his community, and his unwavering commitment to challenging the status quo.

Products Of My Environment is more than just a streetwear brand—it’s a movement toward authenticity, inclusivity, and a future where fashion becomes a vehicle for personal and cultural empowerment.

A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From Fort McMurray First Nation, Presley MacMillan, Founder of 12:21 streetwear and 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient, is on a mission to create a premium streetwear brand that not only offers luxury aesthetics but also fosters positive change. Established just over a year ago, 12:21 streetwear is committed to using sustainable materials and ethical production methods, ensuring that the brand aligns with values of social responsibility and environmental conservation. Additionally, a percentage of the brand’s sales go toward raising awareness and supporting individuals facing substance abuse, homelessness, and environmental causes.

“The idea behind 12:21 is to become a leading sustainable and inclusive clothing brand that empowers individuals to express themselves authentically,” Presley explains. At its core, the brand is inspired by the angel number 1221, a symbol of positive change, new beginnings, and manifestation. “When you see 1221, it’s a sign to make positive change, and we want our clothing not just to be a fashion statement but a tool for cosmic alignment and personal transformation,” she adds. 12:21 represents more than just fashion; it’s a movement toward spiritual growth and empowerment.

At 12:21 streetwear, Presley and her team are passionate about producing fashion that people can feel good about buying and wearing. “We work with manufacturers who ensure ethical labour and prioritize minimizing negative environmental impacts,” Presley says, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to sustainable and ethical practices. The brand also takes pride in collaborating with other Indigenous artists and hiring Indigenous people, creating a platform that amplifies Indigenous voices within the fashion industry.

For Presley, Indigenous design and fashion represent a powerful connection to her heritage, culture, and community. “It’s a way to honour my ancestors and showcase our resilience, creativity, and beauty,” she explains. Indigenous design goes beyond aesthetics—it’s a form of storytelling, cultural preservation, and self-expression. Through 12:21, Presley strives to continue this tradition, blending modernity with Indigenous culture to create designs that resonate with both contemporary and traditional values.

“When people see 12:21’s designs, I want them to feel a sense of connection to the story and culture, empowerment to support Indigenous creators, and joy in the beauty and positive energy,” Presley shares. Just like the meaning behind the angel number 1221, Presley wants her fashion to represent new beginnings and manifestation, allowing people to feel part of a movement that celebrates Indigenous culture while making a meaningful impact.

Looking ahead, 12:21 has ambitious goals that align with its mission to make a difference. Presley’s vision for the brand includes empowering Indigenous communities through fashion, preserving and celebrating Indigenous culture and storytelling, and creating a platform that challenges stereotypes and promotes authentic representation. “We want to foster inclusivity and diversity in the fashion industry while developing sustainable and ethical practices,” Presley says. Additionally, the brand is committed to building a global community that appreciates and supports Indigenous design and collaborating with other Indigenous designers and artists to create something truly unique and impactful.

Receiving an Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant is transformative for 12:21, providing the financial boost needed to invest in the business and gain credibility in the industry. “The grant will allow us to scale our operations, expand our product line, and experiment with innovative designs and sustainable practices,” Presley notes. It will also open doors for networking opportunities with industry experts, mentors, and collaborators, while increasing the brand’s visibility and attracting new customers. Most importantly, the grant will amplify the positive social and environmental impact of 12:21, contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable fashion industry.

Presley offers valuable advice to other Indigenous individuals interested in fashion: “Stay true to your roots and authentically share your story. Learn from your ancestors, connect with other Indigenous designers, and prioritize sustainability.” She encourages aspiring designers to resist cultural appropriation, take risks to innovate, and build a strong online presence. “Seek mentorship, stay resilient, and embrace your identity,” Presley adds. “By doing so, you’ll make a meaningful impact and inspire others.”

A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From Muskowekwan First Nation, Alex Manitopyes, a and non-binary and trans masc, Founder and CEO of SACRD THNDR, and 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient, is creating a luxury fashion brand that celebrates Indigenous culture through modern accessories. With a focus on inclusivity and cultural expression, SACRD THNDR blends traditional Indigenous art and symbolism with contemporary fashion trends, offering lightweight acrylic earrings and accessories that carry both aesthetic and cultural significance.

Founded in 2023, the brand has quickly gained recognition for its unique approach to merging cultural heritage with high fashion. Alex’s journey with SACRD THNDR is deeply personal. “The reason for starting the business stemmed from a desire to create a platform that not only showcases Indigenous art but also empowers diverse identities, mainly through the lens of Two-Spirit perspectives,” Alex explains. They recognized a gap in the fashion industry where Indigenous voices and stories were often underrepresented or misinterpreted, sparking a desire to reclaim and celebrate Indigenous culture in a modern context.

The foundation of SACRD THNDR is inclusivity. “Our accessories are designed for everyone to wear, regardless of gender or background,” Alex emphasizes. The brand offers a platform for cultural expression and awareness, inviting people from all walks of life to connect with Indigenous culture. “Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to embody the essence of Indigenous traditions while appealing to contemporary aesthetics,” Alex says. This fusion of past and present is central to the brand’s ethos, creating accessories that are not only beautiful but meaningful.

Indigenous design and fashion hold deep cultural importance for Alex. “For many Indigenous peoples, design is not just about creating beautiful objects; it is an integral part of our culture, history, and connection to the land and ancestors,” they explain. Through SACRD THNDR, Alex strives to honour their heritage while challenging traditional norms in the fashion industry. “Indigenous design challenges the dominant narratives of the industry, which often overlook or misrepresent Indigenous perspectives. It’s about reclaiming our narratives and ensuring our voices and artistry are authentically represented,” Alex adds.

Each design from SACRD THNDR carries a story. “When people see my designs, I want them to feel a deep connection, appreciation, and curiosity,” Alex shares. They aim for their creations to spark conversations about Indigenous culture, identity, and the importance of representation. Alex believes that fashion can be a powerful vehicle for awareness and education, and they use SACRD THNDR to open up these important dialogues. “I hope individuals feel empowered when wearing SACRD THNDR pieces, and I’m proud to showcase accessories that embody strength and art,” Alex notes.

Looking to the future, Alex has ambitious goals for SACRD THNDR. “My goals include elevating Indigenous voices in fashion through authentic representation, creating inclusive designs that resonate with a diverse audience, and incorporating sustainable practices in our production,” Alex says. They also hope to expand the brand’s offerings and engage with Indigenous communities through collaborations with artisans and storytellers. Ultimately, Alex aspires to position SACRD THNDR as a pioneering force in the luxury fashion world, all while honouring their ancestors and inspiring future generations of Indigenous designers.

Receiving the Aritzia Fashion Grant will significantly support SACRD THNDR’s mission. “The grant will provide essential funding for production costs, allowing us to create high-quality, culturally reflective pieces,” Alex shares. They see the grant as an opportunity to increase the brand’s visibility, improve its business strategy, and invest in sustainable practices. Additionally, the grant will enable SACRD THNDR to engage with Indigenous communities through collaborations and educational initiatives, fostering a greater appreciation for Indigenous cultures.

For aspiring Indigenous designers, Alex offers encouraging advice: “Embrace your culture as a source of inspiration and authenticity. Focus on storytelling to connect with consumers and prioritize sustainability in your practices.” They also stress the importance of building a supportive network and staying resilient in the face of challenges. “Most importantly, enjoy the creative journey and celebrate your achievements as you make a meaningful impact in the fashion world,” Alex advises.

A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, Conlin McDonald, Founder of E3 Apparel Ltd. and 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient, is building an Indigenous brand rooted in cultural awareness and language revitalization. Named after his three sons, E3 Apparel Ltd. represents a deeper mission: connecting with his Indigenous roots and passing that knowledge on to future generations. “I started E3 Apparel Ltd. six months ago while in the process of reconnecting with my culture and language,” Conlin shares. “It’s not just for me but for my children and the next generation.”

Conlin’s drive comes from his family’s history. “As the grandson of a residential school survivor, I feel a need to learn what was taken away,” he explains. His journey isn’t just about launching a business, it’s about reclaiming culture; “While regaining knowledge and spreading awareness, we do it for our ancestors,” he says. This sense of purpose is at the core of everything he does, and it’s what makes his brand stand out in today’s fashion industry.

Indigenous design and fashion have been transformative in recent years, serving as powerful tools for cultural expression and pride. Conlin reflects on this evolution, saying, “Indigenous design and fashion have spread the culture in so many ways across the world. There was a time not long ago when it wasn’t acceptable to do so. So I’m very proud to be a part of it today.”

Conlin aims for his designs to be more than just clothing; he envisions them as conversation pieces that inspire dialogue about language revitalization and cultural history. “I want those who wear my designs to feel engaged, not only in the style and design of it but also in the deeper message behind it,” he explains. Each piece is crafted with intention, inviting wearers to connect with Indigenous culture in a meaningful way.

Looking to the future, E3 Apparel Ltd. has ambitious goals for global reach. “We have global ambitions in the near future, with our new manufacturing being upgraded for the best quality,” Conlin says. His focus on quality is paramount, and he’s excited about the future of his brand. Expanding beyond Canada, Conlin hopes to showcase Indigenous fashion on the international stage, spreading the message of cultural awareness and the importance of language revitalization far and wide.

A great accomplishment for Conlin and E3 Apparel Ltd. is having one of his products selected for inclusion in the 2024 Pow Wow Pitch Box, a collaborative initiative of Pow Wow Pitch to procure up to 250 units of products from Indigenous entrepreneurs and provide a platform for them to reach hundreds of new customers.

For Conlin, receiving recognition for his work with an Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant is deeply meaningful. “Receiving this grant is worth more than the money. It’s the recognition that we are on the right path for all Indigenous people,” he shares. The acknowledgement validates his efforts and motivates him to continue on this journey of cultural reclamation and empowerment.

To those aspiring to enter the fashion industry, Conlin offers simple but powerful advice: “Anything is possible if you set your mind to it.” He emphasizes the value of resilience, sharing that failure is part of the process. “You’ll learn more by failing and trying than by never having tried at all,” he encourages. Conlin’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and a deep connection to his heritage—values that drive him as he builds E3 Apparel Ltd. into a brand that is not only stylish but culturally significant.

A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From the heart of the Biljik First Nation in New Brunswick, Shayna Boudreau, Founder of Amakehs Designs and 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient, embodies the spirit of Indigenous creativity and cultural celebration through her unique powwow attire. Known for her beautifully crafted garments, Shayna’s most popular creation is the Overall Ribbon Dress, a piece that combines traditional elements with modern designs, resonating deeply with families looking for something special for cultural events.

Shayna’s journey began in 2021, when she made her very first ribbon skirt in July and launched Amakehs Designs just a few months later in September. Starting small, she crafted and sold her creations at her community powwow. The birth of her daughter in 2022 sparked further inspiration, leading Shayna to create custom regalia and outfits for her little one. This passion turned into a viral sensation when she shared her daughter’s Overall Ribbon Dress on TikTok. “That’s when they gained popularity!” she recalls with excitement, as the adorable designs quickly caught the attention of families across the country.

For Shayna, her business is more than just a creative outlet. “I’m incredibly passionate about my business because sewing brings me a sense of peace and fulfillment,” she explains. “Knowing that families trust me to create outfits for their children during their most cherished moments makes me feel like a part of their family.” It’s this emotional connection that drives her work, as she finds immense joy not only in sewing but also in teaching others the art, and sharing the creativity and joy that it brings.

Shayna describes Amakehs Designs as a brand that stands for creativity, community, and individuality. “Each outfit I create is not just clothing; it’s a way to connect with families and their stories,” she shares. “My brand represents empowerment through creativity, as I aim to inspire others to learn how to sew and express themselves through their own creations.” For Shayna, every garment symbolizes love, tradition, and the lasting bonds formed through shared experiences, making her work deeply personal and meaningful.

The significance of Indigenous fashion is something Shayna holds close to her heart. “Indigenous design and fashion represent a rich heritage, cultural resilience, and a celebration of identity,” she says. To her, each piece tells a story, reflecting the traditions and beliefs of her ancestors. “Indigenous fashion is about honouring my roots while embracing contemporary expressions of culture,” Shayna explains, adding that it’s an opportunity to promote sustainability, showcase craftsmanship, and foster pride within her community. Ultimately, for Shayna, Indigenous fashion is about preserving culture, empowering people, and inspiring future generations.

When asked what she hopes people feel when they see her designs, Shayna replies, “I want them to feel a sense of connection and joy.” Her fashion aims to spark curiosity, encouraging others to explore their own cultural narratives. “Ultimately, I want my fashion to resonate on a personal level, sparking conversations about heritage, creativity, and the power of self-expression,” she adds.

Looking ahead, Shayna is focused on growth, community, and cultural representation. While she currently specializes in children’s attire, her ambitions for Amakehs Designs include expanding to offer adult clothing. “This expansion will allow me to reach a wider audience and provide families with matching outfits that celebrate our Indigenous heritage,” she shares. Shayna envisions creating collections that balance traditional elements with contemporary styles, making them accessible and appealing to all ages.

Beyond designing clothes, Shayna hopes to use her platform to empower others by teaching the art of sewing and sharing the stories behind each garment. Her goal is to create a community where people can connect through their love of fashion and culture. “I hope my brand not only provides beautiful clothing but also fosters pride in our identity and inspires others to celebrate their own heritage through fashion,” she shares.

Securing an Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant is a game-changer for Shayna’s growing business. “It will allow me to invest in essential tools, like my very first industrial sewing machine, which would significantly enhance my production efficiency,” she says. She also plans to use the grant to design a professional website, a crucial step for expanding her online presence, and reaching a broader audience. “A well-crafted website will not only showcase my designs but also facilitate sales and foster a deeper connection with customers,” Shayna explains. With the support of the grant, she’s eager to elevate her business and continue sharing her passion for Indigenous fashion.

Shayna leaves aspiring Indigenous fashion entrepreneurs with heartfelt advice: “Stay true to your roots and embrace your unique heritage. Your cultural background is a powerful source of inspiration that can set your designs apart.” She encourages others to focus on storytelling through their creations, to take the time to develop their skills, and to seek out resources and mentorship within their communities. “Collaborating with other Indigenous artists and designers can be incredibly enriching,” she adds.

A Conversation with 2024 Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant Recipient

From the rich heritage of the Williams Lake Indian Band Shuswap, Indiginize Creation embodies tradition through custom, free-hand designed hats inspired by Mother Earth. Owner and 2024 Aritzia Fashion Grant Recipient, Janelle Alladina, shares her journey with Indiginize Creation and how she is empowered by tradition and etching her niche in the fashion industry.

Janelle’s business, Indiginize Creation, crafts custom designed hats inspired by Mother Earth and Indigenous teachings. Merging traditional designs with a modern perspective, the brand aims to share Indigenous culture in a contemporary fashion light. As a new and growing brand, Janelle is taking a new direction with Indiginize Creation by collaborating with fellow Indigenous artists to incorporate styles and themes from more Indigenous cultures.

This is Janelle’s second consecutive year winning an Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant and over the past year has been reaching and excelling past her goals.

Janelle is motivated to pursue an entrepreneurial path from a deep sense of belonging. She shares, “Do it for the little girl from the rez who never saw herself or culture represented in the Fashion industry.”

There’s an emotional depth to Janelle’s venture. “I want to empower our people and women in business, it brings me such pride showcasing an Indigenous woman-owned business and being a trailblazer in the fashion world,” she shares. To her, Indiginize Creation isn’t just a brand; it’s a bold effort to reclaim space in the fashion industry and to pave the way for future generations to express their creative passions.

When asked about her brand’s ethos, she doesn’t hesitate, “My brand represents empowerment, taking back spaces, and keeping our Indigenous culture and teachings alive. It means creating wearable art that can express oneself and each person’s uniqueness.”

The significance of Indigenous designs and fashion isn’t lost on Janelle. Having personally faced adversity for wearing her cultural attire, she envisions a different world for the younger generation, where they can wear their heritage with pride. “Indigenous fashion isn’t just fashion, it’s a movement to reclaim a rightful space in the fashion world and to light a path for future generations to share their passion and creativity,” shares Janelle. “I want our people to feel proud seeing our cultural designs represented, something that wasn’t common or seen growing up.”

Looking ahead, Janelle shares what’s next for Indiginize Creation, “My vision for the future is to leverage more partnerships with retail stores, right now my hat creations are currently in two stores across British Columbia. My goal is to see my hats on International main stages in the fashion industry and to be worn by influential peoples across Turtle Island to showcase more of our culture,” she says, aiming for Indigenous designs to have their rightful place in mainstream fashion and runways.

With the support from the Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grant, Janelle is eager to expand her product line with children’s hats that she is already being requested for. The Grant will aid Janelle to continue expanding her brand and deliver more products.

Janelle leaves with a message for the aspiring Indigenous youth poised to make their mark in the fashion industry: “The time is now to stand tall, be proud of who you are and where you come from, take our teachings and lead with it.” She stresses the importance of connecting with one’s roots, taking inspiration from nature and the wisdom of the elders. To them, she says, “We have a lot of beauty in our culture, it’s time we showcase it.”

Pow Wow Pitch, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs, is proud to announce the renewal of its partnership with Aritzia, a design house with an innovative global platform, to award and spotlight six emerging Indigenous fashion entrepreneurs with the Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grants.

As part of Aritzia’s commitment to participating in acts of reconciliation, both within its organization and with Indigenous communities across Canada, the Everyday Luxury retailer has partnered with Pow Wow Pitch for its third year to support Indigenous fashion entrepreneurs and businesses.

In 2022, Pow Wow Pitch introduced a fashion industry category with the support of Aritzia. The partnership included the launch of Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grants to empower the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs developing apparel, accessories, designer brands and businesses. Additionally, Aritzia provides mentorship to semi-finalists across all categories to help refine their pitches.

This year, Aritzia will award six Indigenous Fashion Grants to the winners of the fashion category. Three $2,500 grants and three $1,000 grants will be presented to those recognized for creativity, motivation, community impact, presentation and their capacity to scale.

Aritzia’s support goes beyond providing funds by creating opportunities to recognize the immense talent and dedication of Indigenous entrepreneurs. Together, Aritzia and Pow Wow Pitch are taking steps toward reconciliation through creative, cultural and economic empowerment.

“The Aritzia Indigenous Fashion Grants, in collaboration with Pow Wow Pitch, are a key part of our commitment to fostering creativity, diversity, and meaningful reconciliation year-round,” said Corinne Kepper, Vice President of Corporate Giving at Aritzia. “We’re proud to offer not only funding but also mentorship to these talented entrepreneurs, helping them scale their businesses and make a significant impact in their communities.”

“We’re grateful to Aritzia for their unwavering support of Indigenous entrepreneurs, brands, and designers. Their commitment to providing direct support to Pow Wow Pitch entrepreneurs with fashion grants showcases Aritzia as a leading example of how to enable businesses to scale and thrive,” said Naomi Sarazin, Executive Director of Pow Wow Pitch. “Together, we’re creating a future where Indigenous entrepreneurs can inspire the next generation and demonstrate the growth of the global Indigenous fashion industry.”

By investing in Pow Wow Pitch, Aritzia aims to champion and contribute to the growing community of support for Indigenous entrepreneurship.
