About Pow Wow Pitch

Pow Wow Pitch is a not-for-profit organization supporting and funding early-stage Indigenous entrepreneurs across Turtle Island. Purpose-built to empower Indigenous entrepreneurs so they can thrive in the world, feeling supported, safe and encouraged to develop their ideas and build businesses that create a positive cycle of growth. Through resources and mentorship, we empower Indigenous entrepreneurs to build businesses while amplifying their stories to inspire future generations and foster a more inclusive world.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized, community-minded communications and marketing professional to help develop and share compelling stories about Indigenous entrepreneurs, community partners, and award recipients through thoughtful, culturally-grounded communications. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer with in-depth knowledge of current marketing trends and a keen interest in trying innovative, new ways to reach target audiences. The role requires excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines while supporting a range of key online and in-person programs, notably: the Indigenous Business Pitch Competitions, the Indigenous Entrepreneur Awards, the Pow Wow Pitch Box Program, the Indigenous Startup Program, Pow Wow Market and Pow Wow Pitch Podcast.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain the Pow Wow Pitch social media and communications campaign content calendar.
  • Write content for a range of digital and print channels, including the website, blog, brochures, newsletter, speaking notes, podcast scripts, press releases and all social media channels (i.e., Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube).
  • Maintain the Pow Wow Pitch website (develop/edit/publish stories, press releases, partner/semi-finalist/winner announcements, videos, graphics etc.).
  • Monitor Pow Wow Pitch’s social media channels and engage with the community daily.
  • Manage the monthly Pow Wow Pitch Podcast, including booking guests, drafting scripts, writing social media copy, creating podcast covers and promotional clips, etc.
  • Oversee all communications for the Indigenous Startup Program, including Motivation Mondays and Tuesday Tips, by creating engaging content, drafting copy, coordinating graphics, and ensuring messaging aligns with program goals and partner deliverables.
  • Develop and manage communications across all programs, by developing strategies, messaging, and assets (e.g., social media graphics, copy and announcements).
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with partners, support partner onboarding and ongoing engagement through coordinated communications (e.g., announcements, newsletters, awards presentations, social media promotions, testimonials etc.).
  • Attend up to five powwows annually to capture stories and other promotional content (written, photography, videography) for posting on social media and the website, while also supporting the planning and execution of the in-person Pow Wow Pitch event.
  • Collaborate with a third-party marketing agency to amplify Indigenous voices and stories through paid social media campaigns.
  • Support media relations by developing targeted pitches, building relationships with local media, and securing coverage for Indigenous stories.
  • Coordinate and send monthly newsletters via Mailchimp.
  • Support the Programs Coordinator in managing pitch and awards applications submitted through the WordPress portal, while assisting with participant communications, providing updates, and helping ensure a smooth and engaging program experience.
  • Manage the Slack channel for semi-finalists and finalists, answering all queries in a timely fashion.
  • Manage the Pow Wow Pitch Market on Shopify (e.g., handling orders, printing shipping labels, updating products etc.).
  • Collaborate on the year-end report, summarizing annual highlights and successes into a compelling narrative.
  • Maintain brand consistency and tone rooted in Indigenous culture.
  • Managing the hello@powwowpitch.org general inbox.
